Nope. The second the traitors raised their flag they ceased being any part of “us.” They became “them,” and needed to be “suppressed with maximum vigor.” Any and every remnant of the Confederacy needs to be obliterated.

First of all, I’m not aware of any movement to actually “ban” the Confederate flag. There’s a difference between “banning” something and declining to give it the endorsement of the state–if anyone is actually calling for a law making it illegal for a private citizen to put some kind of Confederate flag or Confederate flag decal on his or her [del]Prius[/del] pick-up truck; well, I would be against that on free speech grounds.

Second, that’s a stupid comparison. If some group had at some time in the past launched a great big bloody war in defense of the principle that

All gays and lesbians are and of right ought to be entitled to equal civil and political rights; that the servitude of the straights, as existing in these States, is mutually beneficial to both bond and free, and is abundantly authorized and justified by the experience of humanity, and the revealed will of the Almighty Goddess, as recognized by all Pagan nations…

I wouldn’t think much of anyone who went around waving the flag of such a reprehensible group, and I wouldn’t want my state to seemingly endorse the ideals of such a group. If some fanatical “gay supremacist” shot up a “straight church”, honestly, that wouldn’t really affect my opinion of the Hypothetical 19th Century Gay Supremacists who had started the great big War Between the Gays and Straights, since my opinion of the Hypothetical Gay Supremacists would already be pretty much set in stone.

But of course the “rainbow flag” is not actually a symbol of Gay Supremacy, so it is, as I said, a stupid comparison.

There is a simple solution to this, because Georgia does not have front of the car license plates. Do not issue any type of state tag connected to the Confederate flag or the civil war. Let people put whatever non official tag they want on the front of their car. I live in a small town in South Georgia and many people have the “old” state flag on the front of their truck. I’m not supporting that flag, I’m saying it is an alternative to putting it on the official tag.

The point was for the Georgia legislature to score points with the ignorant fringe (i.e. maybe 2/3rds of their electorate) by deliberately thumbing their nose at modern sensibilities and the reality of the damage a formal rebellion did to the United States, plus the ongoing reality of the flag being today a very audible “dog whistle” for racists.

No voluntary activity by the masses could achieve that goal.
