Even if the people were no longer alive, the revelations could be embarrassing to the establishment. Wasn’t he supposedly flying to meet with some Duke in Scotland?
The Duke of Hamilton, who did in fact meet him after he had been brought to a hospital to treat the ankle he broke parachuting into Scotland. After Hess identified himself, the Duke notified Churchill of his capture.
Hess claimed to have met the Duke when he visited Berlin during the 1936 Olympics. The Duke said that it was possible, but that he had met so many German officials that he did not recall meeting Hess.
The Duke of Hamilton had been dead for 14 years when Hess died.
I think it is kind of stupid. Remember when Rudolph Hess died? They tore down the old Landsberg Prison, for fear that it would be a “shrine” for neo-nazis.
The 3rd Reich is long past (thanks to God), and most of the people who liked it are long dead.
It was Spandau prison.
And while avoiding a shrine might have been part of the reason, I think that it was mostly the economic development that appealed to the Berlin City officials. They were able to quickly sell the land, and replace a government prison with an Aldi grocery store, a shopping mall, and a mall parking lot – which provided jobs and paid property taxes. vs. a prison which cost the city taxpayers money.
When I was in Berlin, I was told that after years of not doing anything in particular about the Fuehrerbunker, they finally put up a historical sign because they had at one point been expecting a sudden influx of foreign tourists (the World Cup?) and didn’t want them bothering the neighbours asking about it.
This is the opposite of the case: the Nazi bases ( and where most prominent Nazis were from ) were in the south and west, Bavaria and Austria particularly.
The Prussians were rather disdainful of Hitler — and he disliked them, particularly the Junker classes — and were regarded as unreliable. However, since their lands were the first that would be entered by the Russians it wasn’t in their interests not to support the war-effort.
And here I always thought Spandau Prison was torn down so they could build a ballet theater there.
My, my, us Brits certainly kept ourselves busy didn’t we ?
I expect that it was also British Intelligence officers who spread The Black Death throughout europe during the Middle Ages, were behind the Grassy Knoll, and keep their hands in when off duty by mistreating fluffy, cuddly kittens.
What a rotten lot we really are.
Admitting wrongdoing is always a healthy first step towards correcting bad behavior. So kudos, Lust.
The strongest foot hold the national socialists German workers partei had was where its roots originated . This is Munich which is southern Germany though it is near the south east border it is not usually referred to as eastern Germany. The north and south germans were usually quite different hence the Prussian and Austrian wars and well known disdain for each other. They have at times and under certain leadership fight side by side for a common cause such as ww2 and ww1.
And building another Aldi is rarely a bad idea. Wife wants to go after work, so I have my quarter in my pocket!
