Can anyone help with the meaning of these two sentences in German? It is from a Der Spiegel article about the differences in Greenpeace’s report and the Chernobyl Forum’s report on predicted death tolls.

I am thinking it says something like, "Actually, last September when the IAEA released their report they had to contend rabid anti-nulcear protests. Greenpeace is not the first public critic they’ve (IAEA) had but they’ve (Greenpeace) picked … I don’t know what…the wrong dog to mess with? Or am I way off base in my interpretation?

“Tatsächlich hat eine im September vergangenen Jahres von der IAEA herausgegebe Studie des internationalen Tschernobyl-Forums für würtende Proteste von Atomkraftgegnern gesorgt. Greenpeace ist da nicht der erste öffenentliche Kritiker - hat sich aber offenbar den falschen Adreesaten ausgesucht.”

Actually a report of the international Chernobyl forum published by the IAEA in september caused furious protests of opponents of nuclear power.

Greenpeace is not the first public critic there [in that case] - but apparently [Greenpeace] chose the wrong addressee.

I don’t know what exactly their mistake was or any other details, but that should be a relatively literal translation.

According to the article the basis for the ‘wrong addressee’ remark is that the IAEA says it only published the report but the Chernobyl Forum (of which the IAEA is only one member) is responsible for its contents. (Greenpeace accuses the IAEA of a pro-nuclear bias as the IAEA’s charter states its tasks as promoting civilian nuclear power and preventing weapons proliferation, and Greenpeace oppose the former)

Thank-you both for such quick responses! I was a little off in my understanding. Regarding both reports, I suspect the truth is somewhere in the middle.
