Germany Critical Reception of The Hindenburg (1975)

I’m writing a paper on cross-cultural cinema criticism and intergenerational shift in taste, using Robert Wise’s 1975 film The Hindenburg as an exemplar.

While it’s been easy to find American criticism of The Hindenburg, finding information on German and European critical reception of the film has been much harder. Can anyone point me in the direction of English-language sources?

Thank you,
Nathan

I can’t help you, but if the foreign press was anything like the American critics, they probably didn’t like it.

I have a hard time seeing West Germany getting bent out of shape about “The Hindenburg”. Wern’t they firmly entrenched in a guilt phase then?

It’s brave to pick a film to focus on when you haven’t even seen the foreign criticism yet. That said, I combed through German articles, and I couldn’t find any reviews contemporaneous with the release of the movie.

Why Hindenburg? Choosing a 40-yr-old movie that wasn’t that big worldwide will reduce the number of reviews you will find online. Either pick another film or get an extension on the paper from your prof. Had a professor who gently pushed me away from a topic because of the paucity of material. What are you comparing it with?

BTW, we aren’t supposed to help you with your homework, but I won’t tell if you won’t.

Maybe contact Universal Pictures. They might have something in their old files.

Was it even released in those nations? I think it probably died an ignominious death here. I can’t imagine the studio having the balls to try and foist it off on some other victims.
