Gertrude Stein Quote

Did she originate the saying, “There is no there, there?” Where was she talking about? I’m trying to find a cite for the quote and believe she said it about Oakland, CA.

According to a Gertrude Stein website, the quote “There is no there there” refers to Oakland, California, where Stein was raised. It appears in her book “Everybody’s Autobiography”. It was reference to her revisiting her former home in the 1930s and discovering that her childhood home was no longer stadning.
