Another strip does attribute his name to his fang though, but if I remember right, it may have been Rob’s friend Joe saying this, so he could well be wrong. Conley has said that he may reveal the story of Bucky’s missing fang some day…
Governer Quinn is right about the initial strip, but I remember an earlier birthday strip in which Bucky asked for Baboon Repellent. He seems to have changed his view on them now!

No, Joe was the one who claimed that Bucky was named for Buck O’Neal, while Rob claimed that it was for the tooth. For all we know, they could both be wrong.
I wonder what will happen if Bucky ever learns that, according to the theory of evolution, Humans are monkeys, or notices that rob looks kind of like a monkey.
I could swear he called Rob “monkey” numerous times in the early strips.

I missed the early strips, so you could be right, though I do remember him calling Rob “Pinky” a lot.
That was in a comic a few months back. The cat tried to attack the ferret, had an accident, and lost his tooth.
Nothing wrong with that cat that couldn’t be cured with a burlap sack full of rocks and a convenient river.
My wife finds this strip hilarious. I cannot imagine why anyone could consider Bucky anything other than obnoxious.
Actually, Bucky has always had only one tooth … when he got into the fight with Fungo his “pointy” got knocked out and the dentist put it back. Bucky was wearing headgear for about a week. Hysterical.
And there is a column from a while back where Bucky says something along the lines of, “Monkeys look delicious,” and when Rob tries to get him to clarify, Bucky just says, “Don’t look at me, they’re not my cousins.” He does still refer to Rob as “Pinky” from time to time.
I remember the infamous “babboon repellent” strip, too … it’s from early on, and you can find it in one of the reprint books now. Classic Bucky. Love that strip!!
Bucky is Everycat. Of course he’s obnoxious.
The only thing funnier than the regular strip is the Sunday strip where they color him with those innocent blue eyes.
There was a Sunday comic several months ago where Bucky watched a television special on evolution and declared he didn’t believe in it - “Bucky Katt didn’t come from no monkey!” Darby explained that cats in fact evolved from a rat-like mammal, which blew Bucky’s mind and gave Satchel a good laugh. “Uncle Monkey’s lookin’ pretty good right now, eh Rat-Boy?”
Yes, but I’m sure that Darby Conley does not need hundreds of angry letters from irate pet owners saying “How dare you give that cat chocolate and/or dairy products!” And, believe me, he would get them if he had let Bucky eat the ice cream.
Besides, I’m pretty sure that I’ve seen references in the strip to Bucky being lactose intolerant. Something about Bucky misunderstanding the word “cantankerous”, as I recall… Ring a bell for any of the fans?
I don’t know about lactose intolerant … but he’s pretty intolerant of most things, so I don’t see why lactose would be any different. (Rim shot.) Still, the look on his face when he saw Satchel’s present …
And Bucky frequently misuses / misunderstands big words. I can’t remember the context of the “cantankerous” episode, but I vaguely remember it. Do you remember the “boo-joy” (bourgeois) bit, when Bucky first gets all revolutionary?
One of the best strips ever is the one where he says that he is pretty “intergalactic,” and Rob asks him what he means, and Bucky explains that he has been watching cable TV all day, and Rob says, “Actually, that makes sense …”
(Can you tell that I am huge fan? I am going home to reread all the reprint books now …)
The strip is damn funny and bucky is quite obnoxious, but he occasionally gets some comuppence. I don’t see the problem.
Bucky is like a feline Archie Bunker, only not quite so lovable.
It is one of my favorite strips.
