Hang on. I asked about your licence, not your car. I understand the hassles of a car, but keeping up your licence? Every coupla years you pay a fee, get an eye exam and a new picture taken (I assume) and you’re good to go. No car payments, insurance, etc. but a little reassurance that in a pinch you’re not stranded…like now. Sure, I guess it’s a little hassle, but cumulatively less hassle than what you’re going through now to get one again.
Crap. Sorry about the coding…

I’ve used them and they’re pretty neat.
I know I let my license lapse because at the time my spouse had a car and the insurance company said I had to becovered on the car regardless if I used it nor not. UNLESS I didn’t have a license.
The Illinois test is a joke. You can miss like what 6 questions. I went to the State of Illinois building right off the Blue Line Clark/Lake Stop. Then you take the eye test and written test. Then you can go to Elston on the north side and borrow a car from your friend. After 11 years of not driving it took me 1 hour in a parking lot with my friends car. I passed no issues. Parallel Parking is NOT on the Illinois test. Just uphill and downhill parking. Remember “UP UP And away” When you park uphill turn your wheel away from the curb. Do the opposite for downhill parking. I wasn’t even tested more than 10 minute for the driving part.
As I said, it got by me because I wasn’t using it. It wasn’t a big deal and I didn’t remember. I was going through a depression too at the time and LOTS of things got by me. It wasn’t important for 16 years. It became, not important, but convenient, so I got one. I have one, now, and I’ll try not to let it lapse again.
Cartigan, you’re right about the Illinois written and drivers tests. Now I know why Chicago drivers are not the world’s best. Still they’re better than drivers elsewhere (Mumbai, Boston). I just wish they’d treat pedestrians as if they exist.
xash, thanks for the Zipcar information!
Definitey not a failing shared by Boston drivers - they ofter accelerate and swerve toward pedestrians.
