Hey everyone… my old Sleep Number bed is kaput and I decided to go back to the traditional type of mattress. I have the sturdy plastic platform the Sleep Number bed was mounted on; do you think I could get by with getting JUST the top mattress, or is a boxspring unit absolutely essential?
I don’t know anything about the sleep number platform but I have a platform bed–conventional mattress with no box spring. It has a series of slats. My kids have platform twin beds, where the mattress basically sits on a piece of plywood. You can do it if the mattress is going to sit on a flat surface with uniform support.
Support is not optional, but if you have a platform, bunk/loft bed, or just plan to have the mattress lay on the floor, you don’t need a box spring. I’m sure whatever supported your old sleep number bed will work just fine with a new mattress, assuming it is the same size.
Thanks, I just found out that most modern sets don’t actually have true box springs anymore; they’re essentially filling the platform/riser function. So just the top mattress it is!
I got a new mattress a couple years ago and I didn’t measure the bed frame beforehand. A box spring (or something very much like one) was included, and I’m fairly tall, so I just got the thickest one they had.
Should have measured first. The top of the mattress was above my waist and I had to climb into bed each night. No problem, really, they had a 90-day exchange policy, so I called to swap it for the thinnest that they had, which is about 2 inches.
When the guys came to deliver the new box spring and take away the old, I told them I could probably get by without one at all. Not a good idea, they said, because if the mattress wasn’t on a proper support layer it would invalidate the warranty.
So,…
- Measure the height of the bed frame before you go shopping.
- Find out what the warranty requirements are.
I had to take the wheels off my bed frame as, with the box spring and pillow top mattress, it was too tall for me to get into without taking a running jump.
I stayed in a hotel with super tall beds once. They were a pain to climb into, but they sure were comfortable! They even had an order form by the bed you could fill out and take to the front desk if you wanted to buy that particular mattress for yourself. But besides the box spring and bed frame, the mattress itself was like 24" thick!
The day I left, I was bending over to pick up my things, looked under the bed, and noticed that there was a little step stool with a couple stairs to help guests get into and out of the bed. Would have been really handy to know it was there before I left. :smack:
2 inches sounds a little thin to me, though. <– EDIT: Never mind, you were talking about the box spring, not the mattress.
