getting an IUD (ParaGuard) placed, anxious

I’m getting an IUD placed on Friday, and I’m more than a little nervous. My husband won’t be able to be there with me to hold my hand or anything so I’m going to be by myself. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Already have 3 kids, two 7 year olds and an almost 2 year old, so I have given birth lol. But for some reason the pain associated with a gynecological exam always brings on the cold sweats and the severe anxiety.
Anyone’s experiences with IUDs or expertise greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

If you’ve had kids, this’ll be a breeze.

I had a copper-T inserted about 10 years ago. A little uncomfortable, and a bit of a pinch, and it was done. It didn’t even take 10 minutes. The anticipation was WAY worse than the procedure.

I’ve never had children, and the doc had no problems inserting it.

Seriously, if you’ve gone thru labor, this is NOTHING. than during labor!

Good luck! I love the IUD and will have another one placed to keep me unexpected-baby-free until I’m officially post-menopause (I’m 45).

I did this a few months ago, and have not given birth, so you will probably have a much easier time than I did. The doc gave me a prescription for 1 tablet of misoprostol to be inserted the night before to open up the cervix (to make insertion easier), and told me to take ibuprofen beforehand (and after, as needed). It wasn’t much more uncomfortable than a Pap, but I was crampy for a couple of days afterward. (I went by myself, too, and was prepared to take a cab home, but I was fine on the train and wasn’t really crampy until a few hours later.)

I wasn’t thrilled at having to do it, but hormonal contraception had become inadvisable for other medical reasons, and it’s nice to think that with any luck, I won’t have to deal with it again, ever – this one will get me through menopause, I hope.

I haven’t had one put it, but I’ve assisted with putting them in many times. As said, it’s way easier if you’ve had children, and shouldn’t be very painful for you at all. Try not to worry about it, although I know that’s easier said than done. If your doctor hasn’t told you already, take a couple of ibuprofen an hour or so before.

I, too, have been looking into having an Internal Underwear Dispenser inserted. It just seems so convenient to get a fresh pair every time one has a BM! I’m less concerned about the initial placement as I am about the ongoing reload suppositories. I understand that a misfolded pair in the suppository shell can, like a badly packed parachute, have severe consequences.

I had Mirena put in a year ago and although it wasn’t painfree, it was just at the point when I said to myself “Okay, if it hurts any worse than this, I’m going to ask her to stop…” and the doctor said, “Done!”

I had some minor pangs for the day after, but I think that was just mental, I don’t even think about it now.

I’m still super nervous. My doctor gave me a 5 milligram lortab prescription that I’m picking up tomorrow. But I’m thinking about asking to also call me in a xanax prescription. For some reason gynecological exams always make me anxious to point of tears.

If you have someone to drive you, maybe you could take a lortab before the procedure?

My hubs is driving me so I am definitely taking the Lortab an hour before the procedure but I’m worried 5mg isn’t going to help much. If I had my way, I’d be knocked out for this :frowning:

I’ve had three coils inserted and two removed. No painkillers were necessary. A pap smear is more annoying.

I cried, passed out and puked.
Super awesome :frowning:

Did it hurt that much? Or did your anxiety make it that much worse for you? Did you get it put in?

Aw hon… :frowning:

I freaked out for my Mirena insert, and I’m sure the doc thought I was a nut case, but I got it in, and it really was a good decision. I think I wasn’t prepared for the amount of bleeding that it would be during the process. Don’t feel bad - I’m sure they see all sorts of emotional and physical reactions.
I was achy and emotional the first day, had my boyfriend at the time be extra considerate and snuggly. I stayed in bed all day, and the next day I was totally fine with just the help of a few ibuprofen. If you had asked me right afterwards if it was worth it, I would have still been crying too hard to answer. By tomorrow, I bet you’ll feel a lot more secure in yourself.

Take it easy for a while, and be good to yourself.

hugs

It hurt, but I have a very low pain tolerance. They shove a small hollow tube through your cervix then push the IUD through the tube into the cervix. Immediately after my ears started roaring and vision.blurring and I passed out. They used the ammonia vial to wake me up. When I thought I’d felt well enough to get up and dressed, I felt dizzy again then laid back on the exam table and puked into the trash can. They made me drink a Sprite and get wheeled down to my car in a wheelchair. My husband was there with my 2’yr ild daughter, I let her ride in the chair with me. The minute we got home I slept until the older two snowflakes got home from school. It doesn’t hurt at all anymore, just a headache.

The kids are getting cereal for dinner tonight

Double post…

Thanks Lasciel, I’m glad I’m not the only wuss.

Sorry, the iud goes into the uterus not cervix. Typo

No, it goes into the uterus through the cervix. That’s why it’s usually easier for women that have had children- the cervix that has been “used” before is easier to get through. It sounds like your blood sugar dropped. Sorry you had such a bad experience, but I hope all the worry-free sex you will be having now makes up for it.

I know what I meant to say Alice but my words got all mixed up, lol. Through the cervix into the baby room. Yikes, just thinking about it again makes ne nauseous. :

How was it discovered in the first place that sticking a foreign object into the uterus would prevent conception (and also be a safe thing to have there for a long time)?
