Those challenging the Redskins trademark are arguing that he shouldn’t have exclusive rights to sell Redskins stuff.
…
No. The First Amendment is what you might call a key point here, actually: In re Simon Shiao Tam, 808 F.3d 1321 (2015).
well said. Maybe we should cancel the Simpsons, since Apu is offensive to (South Asian) Indians, even tho the (South Asian) Indians don’t give a crap. Or South Park, since they’re “offensive” to everyone! Or Family Guy. Get rid of all our popular culture. Yay, no culture!
If Apu’s name were “Stinky Paki” or something like that, you might have a point.
It’s the slur that’s at issue, not just the ethnicity.
How about we just criticize and challenge folks who profit off using ethnic slurs? Seems reasonable to me.
Totally, utterly worthless garbage poll. Badly worded, words chosen to get the result they wanted.
“The Redskins team name is a **racial **or racist word and symbol.” 100% of NA can agree it’s “racial” without thinking it’s in any way “horrible”.
Notice he gives several other questions, but doesnt bother to EVER give the results for them:2 The name-symbol Redskins is disrespectful of Native Americans.
3 Professional sports teams should be allowed to use racial terms and names like Redskins
So, if a NA read the poll correctly, they would answer “Yes” to The Redskins team name is a racial or racist word and symbol. But then, they might very well answer NO to 2 The name-symbol Redskins is disrespectful of Native Americans. and **YES **to 3 Professional sports teams should be allowed to use racial terms and names like Redskins.
And this dude, James Fenelon is a professor, paid for by our tax dollars, yet he releases this garbage… while hiding the other answers.
As has been noted several times, the Washington Post is a very liberal newspaper, that has been critical of the Redskins name for a decade or more. If they wanted anything, it would have been for 91% of those polled to be offended, not vice versa.
Exactly. The standard knee-jerk critique of a poll doesn’t work here.
That’s not a Washington Post poll.
That’s not a Washington Post poll.
Well, the Washington Post calls it the “Washington Post Native American poll December 16, 2015-April 12, 2016”
They further caveat it noting that “This Washington Post poll was conducted . . Sampling, data collection and tabulating by SSRS.”
But, you can call it whatever you’d like in the comfort of your own home I suppose.
Different polls … this poll was conducted by Native Americans Center for Indigenous Peoples Studies | CSUSB it is not the poll done by the Washington Post.
Yes it is.
It was commissioned by the Post. A polling firm likely did the actual work, but the Post paid for it. If the Post had wanted to skew it to get certain results, it could have paid for that too.
No, they dont. Kimstu was referring to this poll:
Center for Indigenous Peoples Studies | CSUSB which implys NA do not like “Redskins”.
The Washington Post poll is
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2016/05/23/poll-shows-native-americans-dont-care-that-much-about-the-name-redskins/
which says Natives dont really care that much about the team name Redskins.
**Why not read the posts? **Two different polls. Two different results.
Okay, got it, never mind. Please quote the post you’re responding to in the future.
No, it wasn’t. Geez, is it too hard to read nowadays?
When you make a comment in a thread about a poll, without quoting the comment you’re responding to that is about a different poll, then yes, it’s hard to read. Please use the quote button next time, thanks.
