Getting published in computer science

Hi all,

My goal in the next twelve months is to get at least two papers published in the field of computer science so that I’ll then have a better shot at getting into the PhD programme. (I’ll also be writing my thesis, of course.)

So what are some tips for getting published in CS?

I’m currently playing “beat the clock” as I write a paper for submission for an upcoming conference, all the while building an implementation of my algorithm as well. I have faith in my ability to acquire the necessary skills with practice, but it’s still daunting at first.

And I suppose what worries me is there’s no guarantees when it comes to publication. It’s all about persistence… and quality.

What’s the best advice in this case?

If all that matters here is getting an entry on your CV, submit to lower quality conferences/journals. If I understand your status correctly (that you’re already doing grad level work), you should know – or at least have a good idea – which ones they are. If not, then your advisor should be able to help.

I’m doing my honours (4th year) so I’m still green. My goal is to get first class honours plus an APA (Australian Postgraduate Award), the latter of which usually requires at least one or more papers being published.

I suppose the key is really just persistence (and knowing how high to aim).
