Getting rid of crickets

Please save my daughter’s sanity.

Her bedroom is in the basement. She now has crickets chirping 24 hours a day. I’m assuming they are getting in through the French drains. She hunted down several and thought the problem was over. Now they have multiplied. This is the third year we lived here and it’s the first time it’s happened.

Short of calling an exterminator is there anything that can be done?

Get poison down in those drains. You’ll terminate the nests themselves.

A cat? I know they can be maddening, i agree poison should do the trick.

Get Intice Cricket bait. It solved the cricket infestation in our house years ago.

Praying Mantises!

I feel her pain. The cold weather we have been having seems to have quieted them down though.

We had them once. We had a trio of hungry pugs who hunted them down and ate them.

I recommend buying some pugs.

Then get lizards and scorpions to control the Mantis infestation!

Sure but you recommend that for everything.

Poison is a little vague for advice. Since this is her bedroom I would like to be very careful about what I use.

That I will look at.

Unfortunately the specifics of our floor plan isn’t great for a perimeter spread. It’s a townhouse. The deck out back is too low to get under. I only have access to parts of the French drain because of the walls they used to finish the basement.

Well, then you can get a dog to chase away the cat…

Most especially, diatomaceous earth…

And I’m here to recommend Dachshunds.

Have you tried those sticky traps? We used those in the basement a few years back when we had trouble with spiders and crickets getting in.

Noise cancelling headphones?

Glue traps can help but are slow acting and aren’t a 100% solution. Granular baits work but it sounds like you can’t do a full perimeter spread.

You can buy the same stuff an exterminator would use – you just can’t buy it at the local big box store.

For quick knockdown: D-Force Aerosol

For long-term control: Delta Dust Insecticide (Be sure to also order a duster / puffer to apply it.)

I have no connection to this supplier other than being a satisfied customer for many years.

We have Chinese water dragons and a bearded dragon–they eat crickets like popcorn. Turn a couple loose in her room. She won’t hear crickets anymore if she’s sleeping on the roof.

Poison in the drains, some box/cage traps as well.
