I hate RealPlayer. I despise it. I loathe it.
Unfortunately, now and then I run across a *.rm file and I have to use RealPlayer to play it.
Is there any other player that can handle Realmedia files?

Fenris, I’m afraid I can’t help you with your problem, but I was wondering if you could help me with mine. I stupidly downloaded RealPlayer a couple of months ago. They had a 2 week trial period that was free. The kicker was that you had to contact them after the two weeks otherwise you were charged $9.95 a month. You guessed it, I can’t seem to contact the company to get rid of RealPlayer. The instructions on the website tell me to call a 1-800 number and the 1-800 number keeps me on the line for ten minutes only to tell me to go back to the website. Should I just contact my credit card company to have them refuse the charges from RealPlayer? What can I do?
realmedia is a proprietary format and unfortunately you can only play rm and ram files with realplayer. They even took streambox to court for a program that allowed people to download streams and convert them to other formats.
Still awaiting answers to my 2 emails (your adress IS steve9_999@hotmail.com RIGHT?
If you have further questions about video formats, codecs, players and whatnot, feel welcome to contact me as I know some about the subject.
Well there is REALONE player. It’ll play it, but it’s not much better.
Remember, there is a FREE Realone version. The FREE Option (called REALONE Basic) is indeed Free.
PS: Streambox Ripper is still out there for download, free… heh heh heh… So, you could, uh, rip the Real file to, say, a .wav or something.
I suppose you could.
You can get a Winamp plug in that allows you to play .ra files on winamp here…
only 63 bytes…works well.
I’m pretty sure that plug-in requires an installation of RealPlayer, but I guess it’ll work if you aren’t sickened by having the program on your computer and simply don’t like the interface.
It won’t change the file association on your harddrive. If you click on the file on your HD it will still try to pull up real player. It won’t change the icon either. You have to play the file through winamp itself. Through the open file button.
I hate Real and their spyware and have not installed it in my computer since I last reinstalled the OS. I converted some RA files I had to WAV. I just do without RA files but if I just had to listen to one I would have some computer with RA download it and convert it. I have emailed some sites telling them to not use RA and switch to WAV.
medstar, you can contact RA at http://forms.real.com/service/custservice/contact.html
Reeder, I really REALLY hate RP. There are two reasons I keep it - www.npr.org and www.thislife.org . If you have completely scrubbed RP from your system and swear that plug-in works, will you please go to www.npr.org (anything, doesn’t matter) and www.thislife.org (specifically, the 1 March 02 episode (entire) and 13 March 98 episode (Act Two, “Squirrel Cop”*)) and tell me if that plug-in works on those files? Those two sites are the ONLY reason I have RealPlayer.
[sub]*I spent part of a Saturday night in my car because I just HAD to hear what happened next - I just KNEW a woman in a slinky nightgown was bad news for a rookie cop…[/sub]
The plug in won’t play streaming ra files. For that you still need real player.
The plugin uses the installed RealAudio engine to play files, so you have to have Real Audio on your system to use it. Kind of defeats the purpose…
