While perusing youtube I came across some videos of people having giant boogers pulled out of their noses. Are those just mucus, or is something else going on when that happens? Can organic boogers get that big, or has some foreign object gotten lodged in the nose in order for that to happen?
That doesn’t look like gauze. Those forceps are going in pretty deep, IANAD but I’d guess they’re going into a sinus cavity to grab that stuff. Which looks like an alien must have attached to his face and laid its egg in there. But the patient didn’t seem to be in any discomfort. My mom had gauze packing pulled out after surgery for a deviated septum and it was quite painful.
Have you seen some of those zit-popping videos? Those things are DISGUSTING, especially when filmed close-up and it’s clearly not being done by a physician.
I’m guessing there was something impacted in there - possibly a foreign object, or maybe a bit of booger that got snorked up behind a flap of the folds of the noggin and gathered more mucus like a hailstone.
My ex had a winter of nosebleeds, and one day I handed him a yarrow soaked handkerchief. He stuffed it up there and the bleeding stopped pretty much immediately, as intended. After 15 minutes I let him take it out, and a giant slug of a blood clot 5 inches long slithered out of his nostril after the handkerchief. It was sooooo disgusting. But no more bleeding for a couple of days!
That video appears to be a post surgery gauze-mucus extraction.
I will tell the tale of my giant booger shared here for the first time. About 20 years ago I had a winter where I suffered with two sinus infections one right after the other. I could never seem to get my sinuses clear. I was always stopped up.
Finally I took some antibiotics that seemed to clear it up and the constant dripping but even after the low level infection had passed there was still this feeling of fullness and this weird odor I smelled all the time. When I blew my nose it seemed like there was a rattling of some kind in my sinus cavity. It was driving me nuts. Finally I was working late one night in my private office and I was determined to blow out whatever was up in there and engaged in an epic, near aneurysm producing, nose blowing session.
What came out the back caverns of my sinus was astounding. It was this 4-6 inch long string of yellow-green snot about half the diameter of a pencil that was so thick in consistency it was like a rubber band and it was hyper sticky. When pulled it would stretch and recoil. It was disgusting but fascinating. The smell was this weird “infected” smell for lack of better term. My body has never produced anything like it before or since. I then attacked the other nostril and got a smaller version of the same thing.
For about 2 minutes after these were removed I had the most amazing feeling of a powerful airflow coming into and out of my sinuses. My sinuses are usually bit closed at the best of times so this was a unique experience. It didn’t last long.
So, I take it that was the end of your sinus infections?
I’ve heard of this kind of thing happening when people have root canals. It didn’t with me, although the first time, the dentist said there was an awful lot of pus. I had been sick for 5 months and nobody could figure out why, and then a small abscess popped up in my gumline. Mystery solved.
