The Amboy Crater is a volcano that last erupted about 10,000 years ago
and is a short hike from old Route 66. It is not a place to visit in the summer as
can reach 110°F (43°C). You can hike to the top of the volcano and down
into the inside of the crater.

Capulin Volcano National Monument in NE New Mexico is similar.

The view from the top of Capulin Volcano on a clear day is really fantastic. To the west are The Rockies, looking east you’re overlooking the edge of the Great Plains and looking south you can see the remnants of a volcanic field.

Amboy Crater had a cameo of sorts (as the base of a volcano) in the 1959 version of Journey To The Center Of The Earth. The effects crew lit a fire in the crater to simulate an eruption.
