I picked up a 16-year-old boy from the Angel Tree at the mall, and I have already bought everything on his gift tag list and I have some money still left over from what I’d budgeted to spend (he didn’t ask for a lot) and I wanted to pick up something good as a surprise gift for him. All he asked for was clothes, so I was thinking of getting a book or a game or something else fun, but I’m not a 16-year-old boy and never have been, so I don’t know what they consider fun.
Heh…(at previous posts).
Well, having been a 16 year old boy only two short years ago, are you not allowed to give gift certificates? I mean, that’s the best bet right there.
If not, and I’m guessing not, I need to know a little more about the budget you’re working in here. Since you said A book or A game, I’m guessing ~$15 or $20.
If so, They’ve got these cool little tiny R/C cars out now for about $10. I’d suggest 2 of those (so he can race with a friend). That’s what I’m asking for for Christmas anyway…
Upon further review, I can’t find the exact ones I was talking about, so I can’t give you a link, and all the ones I did find seemed to be at least $12, so maybe only one, but I’d still suggest something along those lines.
Hey, Dave, I’ve done the same thing. Of course I was a 16 year old boy at the time…
Actually, the Angel Tree is for those who want to provide gifts for underpriveleged youths, Kat didn’t actually pick up the boy.
I’m getting my 16 year old nephew a gift card from Sam Goody or someplace like that, because I don’t know what he both likes and doesn’t already have. But if you can’t do that, my next suggestion would be to buy something like a popular CD or book at Target, Kmart or a store like that, get a gift receipt and attach it to the gift. If he likes what you picked, fine. If not he can exchange it for anything sold in the store (eliminating the problem of buying a CD for someone without a player or a book for a non-reader)
Well, I’m fairly sure they’re not going to rip open the wrapped present and pull out any gift card that might happen to be in it, but I don’t want to buy one to a store that it’d be a big hassle for him to travel to. Maybe, I’ll do the gift receipt thing, though.
If anyone has a brilliant suggestion, though, speak right up.
I was going to suggest a cd from Target with the gift receipt attached, too. Doreen beat me to it. My 16 year old son says get the guy the soundtrack to the Emenim (Emiinim? How the hell do you spell that?) movie. And if he already has it, or hates rap, or doesn’t have a CD player he can exchange it for another CD, or for something else that he needs or wants. I would say Target is better than Sam Goody because, if he doesn’t have a stereo, there are non-music related things available there too. My son’s other suggestion was a subscription to Maxim or Stuff – I don’t recommend this though, unless you actually know the kid (AND his parents) pretty well. However, Nick insisted I include his suggestion because he says there are few things most 16 year old boys (even non-reader 16 year old boys) would like better than a subscription to one of these fine publications.
Dorkus, I was going to suggest a subscription to Playboy for a mere $19.97 - uh, so I hear. Not that I’ve seen it. Or even know what Playboy is. I’m sorry, did someone say something?
I was thinking porn too, but his parents would probably hate that… maybe get him an interesting book, like the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy or something.
