Gifts from Las Vegas

I have a question. My boyfriend’s going to Las Vegas for his brother’s bachelor party. I can’t go, obviously. I’ve never been west of Michigan in my life.

What should I ask for? Something less than $100 but more than $50. Something indicative of Las Vegas.

Any ideas?

Oh and by the way, he has promised to take me next year, when we recover from this wedding!

A $50 chip from one of the nice hotels. Each hotel has its own chips. They are electronic, so can’t be copied.
We were married at the Belliago, which is still considered one of the best. If he wanted to spend more, there’s a Tiffanys in the Belliago.

There isn’t much in Vegas that’s not tacky, souvenier wise. I know, because I scoured the city looking for something. But the one thing that I still kick myself for not getting when I had the chance was a ‘liquid silver’ necklace. It’s a technique used by one of the Native American tribes in the area that makes the necklace look amazing. (at least that’s the story that I got at a local shop)

Here’s an example. It really looks cooler in real life.

That’s not very Vegas, since Coldwater Creek originated in Seattle.

Oops, I should have been more clear. According to signs at gift shops, the style originated with the Native Americans out that way. I originally saw the style at the Grand Canyon gift shops, and also saw it in Vegas. The necklace that I linked to was only supposed to be an illustration of what the style looks like. You can buy the beads online for making the necklace, so it’s apparently spread. That’s assuming, of course, that signage at the gift shops was accurate. For all I know, they outsource it all to Malaysia.

Well, the only thing I can think of that he could bring back which is both indicative of Las Vegas and between $50-$100 would be an STD. But you probably don’t want that…

Seriously, Vegas souvenirs are all tacky crap. Paper weights, snow globes, t-shirts – take your pick. You’d be better off having him take you out to dinner when he gets back.

well if you want a collection of stuff… maybe shot glasses from various casinos.
I live here in Vegas, and I can’t think of any one souviner item that would cost more than $50.
Some of the gift shops in the “Strip” hotels might have higher end gifts but they would be stuff such as embroidered bathrobes. Most Vegas souveniers are cheezy stuff… because Vegas is all about the cheeze, baby

By definition, souvenir gifts are tacky.

When a friend of mine went to London, he brought me back a small plate with a photo of Princess Diana on it. Tacky, but wonderfully tacky at the same time. Perfect kitch.

If he really wants to pick the best of the bestcrap, the place to go is on the corner of the Strip and Sahara - the Bonanza Gift shop. The place is huge, has everything from fake doggie do to Elvis sunglasses with fake sideburns. Wins “Best Gift Shop” every year in the local newspaper list of the Best of Vegas.
They also have some nicer stuff - but is there really anything at a gift shop that someone really needs or wants?

Regading casino chips, best bet would be at the Hard Rock…they have chips with images of Jimmi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and a bunch of other rock stars in various denominations.

Otherwise, the best gift would be to give you a receipt for the deposit on the first night of that planned Las Vegas trip for the both of you!

DMark… How the heck did I forget to mention that place with all their wonderfully cheezy kitch souvineirs. In fact I was thinking about going there this weekend. I hear they have those Jesus action figures

Vegas Dice Clock-

When I was little I was fascinated with these clocks. Each hour is marked with a die- 1-12- very '60 kitschy, crappy, tacky.

Thumbs up on the casino chip idea.
