I disagree with Dennis. It’s glib and all, but kids hate all kinds of shit, including new situations. Drop a two year old in a strange place where the people look different and dress different and he’d flip out. Acceptance of differences has to be taught.
True there is a period there were kids are freaked by all kinds of things. While my 4-year-old son has said somebody looked weird, the only times he’s hit other kids were typical 4-year-old hitting situation, i.e. “He took my toy” or “He hit me first.” You have to be taught to want to kill someone for looking different.
Not into the man with man stuff but woman with woman is my favorite.
I was probably in primary 3 before I realised that my best friend from playgroup, someone who I had played with for at least four years wasn’t white like the rest of the class. I’m not observant enough to be racist. All that was important to us was that he could lay the stinkiest farts on God’s green earth, and when you are seven, that is far more important than the colour of someone’s skin.
Although with hindsight, having a farting Smurf in class would have been awesome.
I found myself getting annoyed with people who see no difference between dressing up as Trayvon Martin, with your buddy pointing a gun-hand at your head for the funny picture, and dressing up as Crazy Eyes, because she’s awesome, hilarious and kinda scary.
Plus, I think xenophobia is part of human nature. My take is that you have to be taught not to hate. You’ll learn to hate naturally, all things being equal.
I don’t think shes following her own logic to it’s (ahem) natural conclusion.
