But she didn’t just complain about it – she compared it to Jews in 1930s Germany. She’s not getting fired for defending conservatives. She’s getting fired for cheapening the Jews’ experience.
I need to know the exact amount of panty twistage required here:
Was Carano actually fired? Or did she just not have her contract renewed for the next season of Mandalorian? Was she even slated to be in it?
Because actively firing someone for having disagreeable views and simply deciding not to employ them in future are very different things.
My understanding is that she’s been saying and posting far-right stuff for some time; I liked the character she played on The Mandalorian, but at some point last year (before Season 2 premiered), I learned about her views and those sorts of posts from her, which disappointed me.
It’s pretty clear to me that Disney’s decision to fire her was not just based on that single post of hers, but that it was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
This was clearly just the last straw – she’s been saying really dumb things, including anti-vaxxer and election-conspiracy nonsense for months.
She’d clearly been told to cut out the nonsense, and she very clearly violated that direction. So she was fired.
A headline entertainer is the public face of your business. If they’re shitting on your brand then they have to go. Everyone understands the stakes; if they don’t then they shouldn’t be in entertainment
I could see the argument against marginalization of a person who is more, y’know, marginal. Like Joe the Plumber or the Taco Bell pornstar. But what’s going to happen is famous person is going to find other work in spite of (or because of) the controversy. As of this morning she’s probably 5x as famous as she was yesterday.
In the public square, we see some terrible people deliberately saying terrible things, and taking advantage of our willingness to act confused when they explain “c’mon, I wasn’t serious” or “I didn’t know what I was doing”. That’s part of why the Trump phenomenon has the legs that it does. Whether you’re really dumb or just playing dumb, that tent makes room for dumb and dangerous bullshit.
I don’t pretend to know her intent here, but when someone says something ignorant and bigoted and then digs in their heels, that is a perfect example of someone who earned themselves a cancelin’. Those people need to go be pipefitters or cops, some job where you get ten do-overs for repeating whatever dumb shit came over the office fax machine.
Walt Disney’s body turning over in its grave over firing someone for antisemitic posts could power Space Mountain for years, so it’s the environmentally responsible thing to do.
She pretty clearly did not intend to demean Jews here; she inappropriately used them as an example. Would she be fired if she’s compared conservatives to Armenians?
If that had been her only transgression, nothing would have happened. But she’s been spewing nonsense for months.
Bullshit. She deliberately used them as an example. It’s been a far right tactic for a while to claim that the liberal government is going to start coming for conservatives like Nazis coming for Jews in the 1930s.
Stop carrying water for the alt-right.
I may have missed it, but what? Are we talking James Woods level nonsense?
So you’re saying she shouldn’t seek forgiveness?
Look, either play the “but she hasn’t had a chance to recant” card or the “it isn’t that bad and she doesn’t need to recant” card-trying to play both cards doesn’t work.
I don’t know who needs to know this, but you probably want to be very cautious when making comparisons to the Holocaust.
And now, the “Look! Over there!” card.
I don’t think she was really given a chance to recant. As far as I’m concerned, she’s allowed to be conservative and say things that people would see on Fox News, even if it’s nonsense.
This whole “She’s hurting the brand so she should be fired” crap is just that - crap. There’s no evidence that she hurt the brand at all, only that some people were apparently offended and demanded that she be terminated within a day of viewing her posts.
As per The Hollywood Reporter:
No, it’s not whatabout; I was told she’s been writing drivel for months and I apparently missed it. The articles I read only referred to the two recent tweets in question, which hardly seem like cause for termination.
Here is a link to a timeline of Carano’s dumb and offensive statements since the summer of 2020.. We’ve got shitting on BLM, shitting on pronouns, shitting on “election fraud”, shitting on masks.
Let this serve to remind us all that when someone spews ignorant bullshit, it is ALWAYS just the tip of a shit-berg that ALWAYS contains the same kernels of stupidity.
I don’t know if Carano is a bigot or she’s just striking the C-student posture of covering ignorance with aloofness. I know I don’t condemn Lucasfilm or Disney for not wanting her to be a public face of their business.
I knew things would be different after Joe Biden was inaugurated, but I never expected something like this. Asahi, who spent the last four years calling for conservatives to be sent to re-education camps, is now having to defend himself against charges that he is too soft on the right. What a mixed-up, muddled-up, shook-up world(1).
(1) Except for Lola, of course. She’s cool.
And let that serve as a reminder why it’s dangerous to casually defend crappy speech that you’re not really invested in.
I don’t watch the Mandalorian and so I don’t know this person and I may have missed it, but have we any evidence that she had been warned about her social media activities in the past? I mean, it’s a reasonable assumption, but do we know for sure?
