Gina Carano is ignorant AF, but cancel culture is really getting ridiculous

And Trump’s Cabinet and hangers-on are the Primarchs? Most of them were failures with deep psychological issues, so that fits.

Warhammer 40k has a lot of enthusiastic Nazis in its fanbase, to the point where Games Workshop had to put out a statement telling them to fuck right off.

With a bit of a wink and a nudge, to make sure that they keep on buying their products. Nazi money is as good as anyone’s.

It says something that (if I recall) none of the four “Big Bads” of the WH40K universe are made out to be fascists, but the at least one (the Tau are iffy) “good” guys are instead.

No, they were told pretty explicitly that they’re not welcome at events or in stores if they’re going to parade their ideology.

If you come to a Games Workshop event or store and behave to the contrary, including wearing the symbols of real-world hate groups, you will be asked to leave . We won’t let you participate. We don’t want your money. We don’t want you in the Warhammer community.

Not sure how to be more clear than that.

Good enough. I hadn’t realized they were so decisive.

Yeah, it stands out pretty strongly in that respect. I wish more companies were willing to tell Nazis to fuck off and take their money elsewhere.

And holy crap, was there a lot of backlash to this very tame announcement.

Papa Nurgle actually seems to care about his followers and we know Trump doesn’t. So I don’t think it’s fair to the big bag of pus to compare it to Trump.

I’m going to defend GW here a bit. I’ve been playing GW games off an on for about thirty years now, and the only place I’ve ever seen Nazi bullshit has been online. I don’t mean to imply that such people don’t exist at all. A few years ago it caused quite a stir when a player showed up for a tournament in Spain wearing clothing with fascist symbols on it. For some reason he wasn’t kicked out of the tournament, supposedly there’s something about Spanish law preventing “discrimination” for political beliefs (at least that’s what the tournament organizers claimed), but to the credit of the other players, many of them refused to play this guy. Unfortunately he ended up doing very well in the tournament racking up a lot of wins because his opponents technically forfeited.

When I’m playing a game of 40k, we tend to talk about some hobby aspects. I’m not really a lore guy, so I stick to talking about models, paint jobs, rules, and that kind of thing. But other than online, I’ve never heard a 40k player complain about black Ultramarines or anything like that. I think such bigotry is far more common online than it is in face-to-face circumstances making such people appear more numerous than they actually are.

I have read a few conversations about female Space Marines, but that was more of a pure lore discussion about why they didn’t exist.

Is the picture on the right photo shopped at all?

Oh, definitely. It’s one of the first response photoshops to Trump demanding the media stop publishing his double chin. This is the original:

That 'shopper was actually surprisingly restrained, IMO.

And IIRC, Disney’s statement about cutting ties with Carano was that she wasn’t currently under contract with them, and they had decided not to re-contract with her for future Mandalorian works.

The internet buzz about this situation typically refers to it as Disney “firing” Carano, but ISTM (although IANAL) that that term doesn’t really apply here, at least not in the technical sense of unilaterally terminating someone who is currently and officially one’s employee. Not certain I’ve got all the nuances correct on this, but that’s my read.

Yeah, her character exited the show pretty naturally. It wasn’t like when Roseanne was fired and all of a sudden her character (the title character!) was killed off and the show was renamed. The impression I’d gotten at the time, as a fan, was that her character was intended to be part of a spin-off (maybe the Ahsoka show, though I also heard they were considering a show about the “Rangers” who were a Rebel-aligned group of lawkeepers at the edges of the galaxy). That just didn’t happen.

I was once in a temp-to-hire job as a contractor. I was offered a 6 month job that was extended to 7 months (they liked my work and needed me longer). The idea when I was brought on board was that it would turn into a full time job, but at the end I was told there wasn’t a budget and the contract ended. I got along very well with my coworkers and didn’t have any problems there, and I remember my direct supervisor was pissed off that I didn’t get to stay. It never felt like I was fired, and nobody said I was fired, so I don’t consider myself fired. That seems like the situation Carano was in, though in her case it wasn’t a budgetary decision, but rather it was due more to problems she caused by the studio from her behavior. But either way, not a firing.

Yep, anyone that has done contract works knows that sometimes your contract is renewed, and sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes that’s because you weren’t a good fit and they’ll find someone else to do the job, sometimes its the job is done and they don’t need anyone, and sometimes they need someone, they just don’t have the budget.

I assume that if she sues them she’s going to have to attempt to quantify her damages.

And she’s been working, throwing her talents into films like the top shelf My Son Hunter, distributed by the top film producer Breitbart News. /s

Will she have to admit that her post-cancellation work consists of performing in third rate piles of shit in order to win her case?

Some details from Disney about what led to the decision to fire (not renew) Gina Carano.

So they confirmed what was thoroughly discussed in this thread about the bullshit claim that modern conservatives were persecuted as much as Jews were in the holocaust.

She didn’t say that. And Disney’s stance that not being able to fire her for her political views is compelled speech is ironic. I thought compelled creation was fine.
