Gina Carano is ignorant AF, but cancel culture is really getting ridiculous

I can’t tell for sure one way or the other, but especially if she already knew she wasn’t being renewed with Disney, I could definitely see this being a deliberate ploy to jumpstart her post-Disney career.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

They are. I just don’t think they should be calling for people to be fired over minor issues, just like I don’t think they should be tweeting racist ideas. I don’t think either should be illegal, but you still shouldn’t do either. Understand?

Reading through this thread was worth it because of this post.

People make comparisons to Nazis and being victimized like the Jews all the time, not attempting to demean Jews but in a clumsy attempt to make themselves out as victims. I agree that Carano is no victim here. Not even having been fired is she really a victim, and I wasn’t trying to suggest otherwise. My only controversial point was that, based on what I initially saw*, I didn’t really understand what specifically it was warranted a sacking.

*I have since gone back and re-read the article and realize that I somehow missed the part (thanks to ads cutting up the screen text) where she mocked the use of gender pronouns by people who identify as trans, which I tend to view as her most egregious offense and was worth a ‘pitting’ in its own right, I concede. In her (weak) defense, she did walk that comment back.

I would acknowledge - probably should have realized early on - that there was more to the story. I was reacting to the initial comments that I saw, which I’ve said from the beginning spoke of her ignorance but didn’t think necessarily reached the level of needing to be ‘86ed’ from Disney employment. I’m admittedly a little less enthusiastic about defending her now.

I don’t think helping to try to overthrow the American Democracy with stop-the-steal tweets and endangering peoples lives with anti-mask tweets are minor issues. Your mileage obviously varies.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

I didn’t say they were mutually exclusive, but you only complained about one reason and didn’t even mention the other. Curious.

They are. I just don’t think they should be calling for people to be fired over minor issues, just like I don’t think they should be tweeting racist ideas. I don’t think either should be illegal, but you still shouldn’t do either. Understand?

No I don’t understand, because what do you mean by “should”? Who do you imagine would be enforcing this “should”? Or is this just an appeal without any expectation of anyone following it?

It rode off on its unicorn to meet up with its two buddies, a leprechaun and Bigfoot.

So far they have pleased one person who had already stopped watching, and displeased one who hadn’t. That’s just anecdotal though.

Do you think they were right to fire her? Cos I’ve got to say, I’m so over the idea that we should reject art if we object to the artist’s totally unrelated bad views. I’m determined to judge everything on its own merits from now on.

Conservatives are hardly the only ones getting cancelled, though. I mean, it’s ironic if they rejected laws that would have protected them, but it still doesn’t make it right.

Do you think people should be tweeting racist shit? Do you think it should be illegal? If both your answers are ‘no’, then you tell me what we should do about it.

No, it’s just that for the first time, they are actually being held to account. It used to be only liberals and PoC would get fired saying the wrong thing (the 50s blacklist, The Smothers Brothers, Colin Kaepernick, etc.). Now that conservatives are also being held to account, we see what a bunch of whining crybabies they are. When it was women, PoC, and liberals getting fired, conservatives were all, “hey, that’s capitalism, suck it up snowflake.”

As someone brought up in another thread … pretend Disney is a Christian bakery, and Carano is a cake that says “Congratulations Mike and Bill.” Should they have to bake it?

Correct - the Mandalorian changed because one conservative snowflake :snowflake: couldn’t keep her whining to herself.

So I presume you think that if someone disapproves of Disney’s severing ties with Carano (note: it’s unclear whether Disney actually “fired” her over this or merely used the opportunity to announce a parting of the ways that had already happened), they shouldn’t boycott Disney over it?

Well, you’re going to have your work cut out for you on social media explaining to all the “#CancelDisneyPlus” Carano fans why their attitude is counterproductive. Don’t let us keep you if you need to be getting on with that, though!

Shunning is pretty good. You want to get up on the internet’s soapbox and scream racist shit to everyone with a connection? I’m going to shun you. If that means your employer says “I want a piece of that sweet sweet Cheesesteak money, so you’re fired” then that’s what it means. May as well tell your company’s biggest client that his wife is ugly. That’s not illegal either.

Shunning is great if you want create an increasingly divided society filled with people who will eagerly vote for the next populist politician. Personally, I prefer education.

“Now that the bad thing is happening to people we dislike, we’ve changed our minds and no longer oppose it.”

Maybe you can educate her. Let me know how that works for you.

“Now that it’s happening to me, I understand the problem” should be the conservative fucking credo.

Repeat after me:
" in order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must be intolerant of intolerance."

I wasn’t suggesting that you were deliberately mirroring Tucker’s 95%/5% strategy, I just thought the parallel was amusing. And I’ve never seen you be anything but heart-on-your-sleeve sincere, for good or ill. But the two instances I’ve seen where you’ve somehow decided that opposition to the deplorables has gone too far, and you turn around and stand up for them instead, just seem to be chosen completely at random, not supported by any compelling facts or evidence.
