Does anyone know if the Commander of the Guantanamo Naval Base was also the commander of the detention camp? The two things aren’t necessarily the same.

As best as I can figure out, no. The Joint Task Force - Guantanamo appears to be subordinate to the U.S. Southern Command, with the Navy base providing only logistical support.

I appear to be correct:

The base commander has no direct role in the detention of the roughly 520 foreign citizens held as “enemy combatants” at the Guantanamo prison, which is commanded by Brig. Gen. Jay Hood and has been criticized by human rights groups.

Cotton’s responsibilities include providing support to the military force operating the prison, as well as serving as U.S. liaison with the Cuban military and commanding an airstrip and port, Dooling said.

The person named in the references to the Yee Affair is not the same as the current commander. The current commander is a different person as well. It seems when the military said “for reasons unrelated” what they meant was that the reasons were unrelated. How devious of them.
