Give me some songs about London

A friend is going to London this summer to study art, and I want to make a mix CD for her with songs about London. So far I have:

Clash - London Calling
Cornershop - Good to Be on the Road Back Home Again (" Too many nights… in dirty London town…")
Third Eye Blind - London
Alanis Morissette - London

Any others that you can think of?

The Smiths - London

Warren Zevon – Werewolves of London

“I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic’s. And his hair was perfect.”

The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset.
Prince - Two Nigs from West Compton.

What?

On the Street Where You Live

“London Town” - Wings
“London After Midnight”- Wrathchild America
“London Boys” -David Bowie
“London Girl”- The Jam
“London Leatherboys” - Accept
“London’s Brilliant Parade”- Elvis Costello

I got all those from a search at songfile.com. There were a ton more, these were just the ones from groups I knew of.

Hairdresser on Fire–Morrissey (“here is London, home of the brash outrageous and free”)

A few more for the list…

Rick Wakeman: “Chamber of Horrors”
Joni Mitchell: “Chelsea Morning”
Wings: “London Town”
Pet Shop Boys: “West End Girls”
Tangerine Dream: “London” (Lyrics direct from William Blake)
Third Eye Blind: “London”

You didn’t specify Taste and/or quality…

ARGH - Judith beat me to it!

“London Crawling” - Rialto

West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
London Bridge is Falling Down - the five-year-old kid down the street.

There’s ‘Street of London’ by Ralph Mctell:

And there’s ‘Maybe it’s Because I’m a Londoner’ by whoever it is:

  • ‘Streets of London’, covered by various people.
  • T-Rex, ‘London Boys’

You could go for specific parts of london:

  • Red Snapper, ‘Spitalfields’

Or an entire album:

  • Sabine Sciubba & Antonio Forcione, ‘Meet Me In London’

“London You’re A Lady”- The Pogues

There’s Gershwin’s “A Foggy Day in London Town.”

I suppose songs by Julie London don’t count.

Towers of London - XTC
London Loves - Blur

Hey, if you want something longer there’s Rush: The Camera Eye. Half of it is about London and the feel of the place.

How about the well-known tune “London Derriere”?

Oooo, good one.

Try this:

A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square - Various artists (I’m partial to the Manhattan Transfer and Mel Torme)

Noel Coward’s London Pride, written early in WW2, and supposedly based on the Cockney flowersellers’ street chant:

I see London
I see France
I see Tsarina’s
Underpants!
