My local library has a DVD and VHS section. The problem with this section is that it is terribly anemic (we are talking maybe 20-03 DVDs and perhaps twice as many VHS). I had this idea that I would somehow like to hustle up a cart-load of DVDs and VHS tapes and donate them. I also don’t have what you could call discretionary income (so I can’t just go buy a bunch), and so I was looking for ideas on how to make this happen.
Do you think that the local Hollywood video or Blockbusters might donate? Any ideas for me?
You might first ask the librarian or library director if they would like you to get more DVDs and videos for them. They may have reason why they don’t want this (the time and trouble of managing the collection, for instance).
Personally, I wouldn’t go to the local Blockbuster - I could very well be wrong, but I suspect they’d probably need to ask head office anyway (even if they’re franchised). Seems silly, and I don’t know about any video stores specifically, but my job often calls for me to solicit donations and set up partnerships, and there can be a lot of red tape involved with big chains for even the simplest arrangement. Local mom&pop type video places might be more able to make the call to just donate than a large chain, but probably wouldn’t have as much overstock. What you could do, though, is write a small proposal to the Blockbuster head office, telling them of your plan, and see what kind of response you got from that.
