Give up your fossil fuel furnace and get a heat pump instead

If we’re going to get the grant, we have to work with the contractor in our area who’s part of this particular grant work.

They do seem to have a decent reputation.

If we were allowed to pick any contractor, I’d first talk to the local contractor who built my CoolBot produce coolers. They did a fine job; they had to figure out the CoolBots, which are relatively new and were newer at the time, but were entirely willing to do so and had no problem getting the installation right.

If anyone is interested, I ran the numbers on November:

Between a combination of milder weather, new insulation and the new hybrid heat pump system, my gas consumption fell 68% vs same time last year.

Between a combination of milder weather, new insulation, the new hybrid heat pump system and increased gas prices, my gas bill went up 10% vs same time last year.

Obviously the pump uses electricity instead of gas - but electricity used only went up c.10% so I have made a sizable net reduction in energy used, if not in my energy bill.

You’ve made a sizeable reduction in your energy bill compared to what it would be now if you hadn’t made any changes, even if it is up compared to what it was last year; because if you hadn’t made changes it would be up even higher.

Think of a refrigerator: the back is warm from the heat it took out of your beer.
Now replace the beer with well water or outside air and make it continuous.

Absolutely, and I’m damn glad I did it.

But it also brought home for me the scale of the energy price increase in a way that simply knowing the percentage increase didn’t, because I cut down over two thirds of my gas use and still paid more. I mean, holy shit.
