Giving ratings on Amazon

You used to be able to mark something 1-5 stars without writing a review. I’m not seeing a way to do it. Did they change the page or am I getting stupid? (Yes, I do realize that the two are not mutually exclusive.)

It looks like they changed the format. Grrrrr.

Just a little semi-related question, I left a review of an exercise DVD on Amazon aaaagggess ago, actually it was two weeks ago and it hasn’t been put up? It wasn’t offensive at all, it was a bad product and I described why and gave it two stars. A negative review mustn’t be the only reason they don’t put a review up, right?

Go to your account and select “Improve My Recommendations”.

You can then rate all your purchases.

As well as “items you own” not purchased from Amazon.

I’ve been able to click a star without writing a review – just did it a couple days ago. Sometimes it’s hard to find the stars, the pages are so cluttered.

I hope they haven’t changed it. It makes no sense to require a review, and it’s hard to find something new to say.

Wait—are we talking about (1) customer reviews on items, or (2) rating transactions, or (3) rating items for the purpose of improving Amazon’s recommendations for you?

If it’s (1), I don’t remember ever being able to do that at Amazon (though you can at other sites, for example audible.com). Each “Customer Review” on Amazon for a book or other item has a rating of up to 5 stars, and Amazon displays the average customer rating for the item, but that doesn’t include ratings from anyone who didn’t write a review.

If it’s (2), where you’re rating the seller and not the item itself, I agree: you should be able to just click a rating without writing anything, but they seem to have changed it so that you now have to. Both here and on e-bay, if a transaction went smoothly, you ought to be able to say so without having to describe how it went smoothly. In fact, I’ve left feedback that essentially says “I have nothing to say because the transaction was happily uneventful but Amazon requires me to type something here.

If I do what Khadaji said, it gives me a list of my purchases – not items I don’t own.

If I’m in recommendations, clicking on the stars works – but if I’m just randomly puttering around, it doesn’t. I was looking at something, and they said “people who bought this also bought…” of a CD I own and like. I wanted to indicate that I own and like it, but clicking on the stars didn’t do anything.

Grr. This is frustrating.

When they offer recommendations, you can say you are interested or that you own it.

Yes, I understand. What I’m whining about is that there’s no way to rate something that they haven’t recommended to you.

Hmm. Yes, that does seem to be the case now. Inexplicable, since the only effect on the site would be to make better recommendations to you (increase the odds you’ll buy something).

I wish they’d let you toggle off the parts of the product pages that you don’t want. There are way too many sections recommending similar/related products by slightly different formulas.

When you are logged in, from your “home page” (where they have Today’s Recommendations for You), there should be somewhere above the recommendations “Rate These Items”.

Click there, and you can search on a book or whatever, and then click your stars.

Okay, that worked, thanks.

What an incredibly counterintuitive way of doing things, though!
