Glasgow and New York crashes

Ah, that’s good. Were I not such an impecunious hermit these days, Clutha or Scotia is exactly the kind of pub I and friends/brothers would be in - you know - decent beer, non-pretentious, non-fashion, music folky or blues etc, so it’s not an enormous stretch to think that it might appeal to some SDMB people.

I’m guessing by this post that the few Glaswegian Dopers are safe. I do hope so.

I’m impressed that all the customers and some passers-by went into action to get injured people out. At that point, they could not have known whether to expect a bloody big explosion or further roof collapse, so three loud cheers to them.

I voted that I’d only heard about the New York crash, but then I realized that the helicopter crash I’d heard about the day before was the Glasgow crash. So I actually did hear about both, but I hadn’t realized the one was in Glasgow.

Had heard of Glasgow police helicopter on Friday night. Not heard of Yew York disaster, but have been offline till now.

In Australia the Glasgow crash was getting more cover on TV

I read about the Glasgow crash online on Friday night. By Saturday morning, even the local TV newscasts were mentioning it (at least briefly.)

Canada’s news outlets are pretty good. Our ties to the UK mean that we naturally would report such an incidence in Scotland, and well the US is next door so of course that gets the news.

In my part of the US, the Glasgow crash was initially covered but was quickly overtaken by Black Friday/Small Business Saturday hysteria . I heard nothing about the incident in New York, but I haven’t watched the news recently. That’s about par for the course these days.

I heard about Glasgow, though I don’t specifically remember how. It might have been through the BBC twitter account, since I know I follow that.

I’ve seen the NY crash briefly on a social network, but not in any detail - but I also haven’t checked any news sources since saw it - it’s not something that affects me directly or is likely to affect anyone I know personally (as opposed to last Sunday’s Amtrak Crescent derailment in South Carolina, since I had to go check a friend’s travel schedule - turned out, they’d been on that train the day before, but I wasn’t sure whether they were traveling Saturday or Sunday when I first heard).

ETA: I’m in the Southeastern US

I check Google News multiple times a day, and heard about the Glasgow crash on Friday night that way and the New York crash early this afternoon. I don’t generally access TV or radio news.

Heard about the Glasgow crash from CBC news feed. This thread is the first I’ve heard about the NY crash

I heard about the NY crash before, but given that that is the railway I take to work every morning, I think I can be forgiven for paying more attention to that.

That seems fair indeed! I hope no friends/family of yours are among the injured.

I heard about both on BBC TV. The Beeb was all over both of them but particularly the Glasgow crash.

The NYC train crash … The train left from the city where I live, so it has been a big deal here. Heard about it from my daughter originally, then we had some special prayers at church this morning, and I’ve looked at the local paper website several times for details.

I thought you were referring to a train crash today in Glasgow, so checked “only NY”…then began reading the thread and realized it was the helicopter crash several days ago. Yes, that was in my local paper as well as mentioned on at least one radio station. Sorry, bad data. Should’ve checked BOTH. Next time I’ll read the thread before answering the poll.

Heard about both of them from the ABC (Australian version of BBC).

From the point of view of the US eastern time zone, the Glasgow crash happened Friday evening in the midst of a holiday weekend, and it took quite a while longer for details (particularly the number of deaths) to be reported.

I’d say that Glasgow has got more news coverage than New York, probably because it’s closer. On the other hand it’s more interesting to me as I have stayed at a hotel across the street from the place.

South Africa, and I heard about both through Gawker.

Ah, spoke too soon. Close friend of my uncle was among the dead.

I didn’t know the man, so I guess I’m not personally affected. But damn. You don’t go out for a beer on a Friday night worrying that falling helicopters might kill you.

I’m in New York City, so naturally I heard about the Metro North derailment yesterday. I heard about the Glasgow helicopter accident on the local news radio station this morning.
