Glee Returns

I thought they said $1800/mo and it was implied it was in a semi-crappy neighborhood, plus new guy spent 45 minutes to take the subway to get there - so, not unheard of to find something like that in an “iffy” neighborhood, far from the city.

I don’t like Ms. Spears’ music, so it was by far not my favorite episode.

Still liking the NYC story better than the Lima story.

IIRC he said so during the summer before season three…then went on to do THREE tributes episodes that season. Four if you could “The First Time” as a West Side Story tribute, although that did include one non-WSS song.

I can understand the temptation to do tributes, since if fans of the featured artist who don’t normally watch Glee tune in then that’ll boost the ratings and maybe the MP3 sales, but it seems like a dangerous game. IMHO the tribute episodes usually suck, and while Wikipedia indicates that they do often improve the ratings for that episode they don’t appear to be attracting new regular viewers as ratings generally drop again the next week.

I’m not sorry to see that, while the original Britney Spears tribute two years ago was one of the most-watched episodes of the show ever, this more recent one only attracted about the same number of viewers as the season premier. Maybe this will discourage them from trying the same stunt again.

I did like that Britney was staging her whole downward spiral just to have a Britney S. comeback. Including the head shaving (attempt).

Wade said in season two that she self-identifies as a woman, but the way she’s being played and written now are making her come across as fairly buffoonish. Part of it is that her over-the-top “Unique” persona works well on stage but is silly in everyday life, and I’m not sure that even Wade knows yet how to make that distinction when it comes to interacting with people. I think that Wade is a prime candidate to get her own episode later down the line this season in which they deal with the transgender issue head-on.

Either that or Wade’s characterization is just bad writing and misguided directing. With Glee it’s hard to tell.

The Britney Spears episode is actually a pretty good symbol of Glee as a whole. On the one hand, they try so many new and interesting things (following the graduates out of state, spreading them all over the nation), while at the same time they do so much that just seems creatively bankrupt (a second Britney Spears tribute, Puck’s carbon-copy brother).

A Ke$ha tribute episode? That would be AWESOME.

I watched it, because I’m stubborn, but thought it was fairly stupid. Of all the people who don’t need a second tribute episode, Britney Spears would be at the top of the list – not exactly an important musical figure.

I assume the fact that she’s the new judge on another Fox show has something to do with it.
