I’ve been taking G-C for probably six months for my knees. I figured it couldn’t hurt and might help. So far I have noticed a difference, I don’t feel as stiff when I get up in the morning. I ran out for about a week a while ago and I swear I felt worse when I wasn’t taking it. I take whatever brand is cheap.
On the other hand, my mom tried G-C after I told her about my experiences and she says it’s not doing much for her. YMMV. I figure it’s worth the expense for me at this point.
Sorry if this counts as resurrecting a zombie thread.
In my experience, it’s not that I feel the effects of taking the glucosamine, as that I feel the effects when I go off it. It’s that subtle for me, but it does seem to help a bit with my joint pain and stiffness. I haven’t done a rigorous comparison of brands or dosages, I just mostly go with what I can afford at the time.
There are some veterinary studies that demonstrate it dd something in horses and dogs.
I’m most familiar with a study that was done at Michigan State vet school (a vet school of excellent repute). Only one brand was tested, Corta-Flx. Horses diagnosed with degenerative joint disease were trotted over force plates that measured the force of their stride; the geometry of thee stride was also recorded with video. The horses treated with Cort-Flx became more symmetrical. The horse that were not treated did not. The handlers, dosers and measurers did not know which horses were treated. True, it was a small study though. http://www.jointsupplementresearch.com/report.html
Cosequin is another brand that has been the subject of a number of veterinary studies. However, I can’t seem to get a hold of the articles, despite numerous references to them existing.
This is anecdotal, of course, but I take glucosamine for a chronic bad hip joint, too, and I find it hurts more when I don’t take the glucosamine regularly. I do wish the pills were smaller, though - those really are horse-chokers (and the liquid is a real mess).
I’d love to simply have smaller pills. I’ve never been clear why the pills have to be so large. I’m willing to take 4 smaller ones if that were an option. Totally going to look for liquid, though!
