MSM? Glucosamine?

Just looking for some experiences from anyone who’s taken OTC joint supplements. Have they worked? Worth the money? I haven’t done my proper research yet, so I don’t know about any possible risks, etc. I’ve seen good results with them on dogs and horses before they were available OTC for human use, and I’m thinking one or the other might help my knee out. It just feels rather stiff, especially when I’ve been sitting in one position for too long. It doesn’t bother me when I’m working out, but sometimes it’s a bit more sore afterwards. Just wondering if it’s worthwhile to look into taking one of these. I’m sure I should “consult my doctor” but at this point, it’s not going to happen due to lack of health insurance.

I appreciate any input!

I was having some hip pain and started taking glucosamine sulfate. Took it for about six months. Had no effect whatsoever. I’m going to start taking Granny Clampett’s Rheumatiz’ Medicine.

I tried a glucosamine/chondroitin combo at the suggestion of my doctor for post-traumatic ankle arthritis. Took it for 3 months or so, and felt absolutely no difference. Of course, arthritis wasn’t my only ankle issue, so who knows.

My sister swears by it, she has arthtitis in her shoulders and says it helps her a great deal.I haven’t tried using it yet.

I’ve been using the products of modern pharmaceutical science like celebrex and T1’s to manage the inflammation and pain in my knees and as of late, my hips.

Goddam you, Feynn, now I have that stupid Celebrex song going through my head. “Celebrate! Celebrate! C’mon an ’ celebrate!”

Thanks, I guess I won’t bother unless it gets worse.

I looked into the glucosamine thing as my knee is sore and stiff. I have ended up purchasing pharmaceutical grade liquid glucosamine. This is supposed to be the best stuff that money can buy.

I’ve been dosing for only 3 days now…I’ll get back to this thread and let you know after giving myself 2-4 weeks.

The amount of glucosamine I’m ingesting is 2500mg daily…and the type is glucosamine hcl and sulfate

I have bad knees due to an old injury. Glucosamine and chondroitin definitely help.

IANAD but I believe that MSM and Glucosamine are functionally a little different. MSM I believe is basically an anti-inflammatory, while Glucosamine is supposed to somehow increase the quantity/quality of cushioning fluid in the joint.

In animals my anecdotal experience shows a range from “does nothing” to “big improvement” so I imagine its the same in people.

MSM is waaay cheaper for animals, most people try it first.

An elderly friend (who was generally very sceptical about such suppliments) noticed a decided reduction of arthritis pain after taking MSM daily. He had serious pain, and he noticed that MSM definitely helped. He wouldn’t be without his MSM!

Also, I remember seeing on L.A.'s CBS station a story about how actor James Coburn was “saved” by MSM. He said he’d stopped working altogether because of his arthritis, but thanks to MSM, he now is able to do movies again. This story used to be archived on KCBS’s website, but now I only find this link (but I can verify that it was broadcast on KCBS, because I personally saw it!).

My husband is sold on it. He had a bum shoulder (for no apparent reason - arthritis, I suspect) and he’s been on it a couple years now and can’t live without it.
