I heard my local TV sportscaster (Minneapolis-St. Paul) refer to the Miami Dolphins by what I assume is an accepted nickname last night as he was recapping Monday night’s Jets-Dolphins game.
I wonder, was he copying Miami football fans when he said “Go Fish”?
Is that really the team’s nickname?
If so, Miami Dolphins fans are stupid and they and my local TV sportscaster need a little re-education. :wally
Ya know what really chaps me? The players aren’t even dolphins! They’re people! Canya believe?
Fuck’s sake, yes. It’s a nickname. It started out as a dismissive crack from opposing fans (“They aren’t dolphins, they’re just little fishies!”) and has since been embraced by Miami fans.
It’s a funny. That’s all. I promise, the overwhelming majority of both Dolphins fans and the US population as a whole know that porpoises are not fish. Get over yourself.
When the Patriots were on their first SuperBowl, we had to beat the Dolphins in Miami first (before losing spectacularly to Da Bears). The slogan in Boston was “Squish the Fish”.
Of course, if a sportscaster in Miami said “go Cetaceans,” a thousand hard-of-hearing senior citizens would ask of their S.O.s, “what did he just say, about the Haitians?”
