Maybe it’s the way I browse. I use Bookmarks, haven’t been able to get Firefox’s tabbing feature to work.
Anyway, when I first log on, “go to first unread” takes me to the first unread post. But as the day goes on, I leave and come back, and first unread takes me to the same first unread that I went to when I first logged on. So I scroll. But it doesn’t happen that way all the time.
TWOP doesn’t have a first unread choice, but when you go away and come back, you’re automatically at the last post you read.
I’d like to get the Dope to work like that for me. Is it possible?
Apparently the vB database cannot keep track of everyone’s place for them. Not exactly sure how other sites do it but I’m told it takes a powerful amount of everything including hot coding for that to happen. That is, I’m afraid, not the story here. Sorry.
I stay logged in - which is safe for me (no embarrassing animal sex stories) because when my laptop is on it’s with me, when it’s off, it’s with me.
I find that the same thing the OP cites is what I get. Since I don’t log out, it always takes me to whatever the last post was since I was first on for that day.
I stay logged in, same reason as Mr Bus Guy however I find that it works most of the time for me, or at least is very close. I find it works best if I don’t use the “Back” button but rather select the forum. The very close is, my guess at least, when I still have the board up in a browser.
It worked flawlessly for all the years before the server upgrade however, in case anyone cares.
If you’ve no intention of making the feature work, remove the button, it’s just annoying. Especially for people who used it often, y’know, back when it worked.
It seems, for me at least, since the server upgrade, the search tool works less well, the ‘go to first new post’ thing is now a goner and access to the site is just as hit and miss, if not more so, than before the upgrade.
The business model being used here leaves me mystified.
I’d ask for an explanation but, honestly, I don’t think I’ll get one beyond the ever popular, 'Expect no improvement, we’re working on it, try again when it’s not so busy (reminds me of a restauranteur saying to his customers, come back when you’re not hungry).
I don’t think it works this way. The only thing the board knows is when you were last active. That’s how it flags threads with new posts in the forum views. “First unread post” is not “which post did you leave off at in this thread” but “first post immediately after the timestamp of your last activity.” If you spend fifteen minutes reading a long thread (and not changing pages), the board’s “timer” resets. Then when you click “first unread post,” the board says, “okay, first post in this thread as of two seconds ago,” which is almost invariably going to be the last one.
Sometimes it works for me and sometimes it doesn’t, and the above is how I account for why.
Your account appears to be in line with the behavior I see on my Board, which is still back in Version 2.x. I do not believe that it is a bug, just a feature that doesn’t work 100% well.
It’s never worked very well for me. I’ve seen it work perfectly on other boards but not this one. At best it gets me within about 10 posts of my last read post but it’s usually more like 40 or 50.
