Go Trump, Go!!!

bolding mine

Actually, unless Congress removes such power with a veto-proof majority, it looks like the president does have authority under current immigration law to prohibit entry into the United States of groups of people as immigrants or as tourists.

Fuck that, vote for him ! Accelerate entropy ! Immanentize the eschaton ! Winter’s been coming for far too long already, I want the Ragnarök in my lifetime so I can tell my kids I was there.

If your party consistently picks candidates who you feel are bad for the country and the party, maybe it’s time to rethink why you support your party and whether you should support them at all.

This is the most worrisome thing about Trump. To a certain extent, the President sets the tone of the country. What a Trump presidency will ultimately do is provide empowerment to the angry, uneducated, anti-intellectual and intolerant. The racism is not even the worst part IMHO.

Yes, I agree. But in order for this horror-movie spectre called “a Trump presidency” to occur, the Orange One would have to win a general election. And as much as I criticize America frequently, on balance Americans are not that stupid and Trump supporters don’t represent the consensus of the American public, fortunately.

Although if he had anywhere near as much money as he claimed he did, and was willing to spend it, and was sane enough to get the Kochs and Adelson and their ilk to support him, he could actually win. But since he doesn’t, and isn’t, he won’t. He’ll go back to screwing people on real estate, running slimy TV reality shows, and going bankrupt once in a while.

I think abortion is a matter of a woman’s right to privacy, and rights should not be subject to legislative review. If we’re stupid enough to elect Trump, you can be sure that Roe will be overturned. And gay marriage. But not to worry, you’ll be able to have all the guns you want.

Rather odd that so far Trump hasn’t stoked up the “pro-life” fanatics. He will, I don’t doubt, when things get more crunchy. But I still wonder why he hasn’t already.

I really want to believe you, but forgive me if I appear cyanotic.

Smapti:

Now, that’s just silly. Bush wasn’t some bombastic, race-baiting reality TV star, he was a twice-elected governor of a very populous state, running on domestic issues like education policy. Whatever you think of George W. Bush - both before he was elected, and after 9/11 changed the tone of his entire presidency - you can’t seriously think that he was elected out of recklessness.

BobLibDem:

If Reagan and two Bushes couldn’t manage to do it, how do you expect Trump to?

Joke answer(maybe): He’s Trump, he’ll just do it. And the SCOTUS will quail before his might.

Serious answer: SCOTUS appointments.

Right now he’s got about a one in three chance according to people who figure those things out and do it well. That is about 33% higher than a reasonable person should be comfortable with. The comparison to George W. Bush is insane. Bush was a seasoned politician and, whatever his failings and being the wrong person for the events of his Presidency, honestly wanted to be a good President. Donald Trump as President would make George W. Bush look like FDR. GWB was a thousand times the statesman Trump would be. If Trump were President and you made a list of all 45 Presidents from best to worst, the gap between #1 and #44 would be ten times smaller than the gap between #44 and Donald Trump. The only thing that would prevent him from doing incredible destruction to his own country and the world would be rapid impeachment.

The election is VERY close. Trump has tapped into many angry people and is running against a candidate who would be regarded as one of the worst ever nominated were she not running against the very, very worst.

running coach:

Reagan, Bush41 and Bush43 all appointed conservative Supreme Court justices, and Roe hasn’t been overturned yet. There are plenty of reasons to not vote for Trump, there’s no need for abortion fearmongering.

I was responding to a post that specified his potential to turn back abortion rights.

There’s one empty seat and a potential for 2-3 appointments.
Pence is as rabidly anti-abortion as they come.
Trump may need to appease (a Republican) Senate with Scalia-like candidates.

The Justices appointed by Reagan and Bushes 41 and 43 may not have overturned Roe v. Wade, but they certainly have eroded a lot of abortion rights piece by piece (or rather, case by case). State legislatures have also increasingly enacted restrictions on abortion procedures that, if not facially, practically roll back the rights set out in Roe. Some of these laws are already being challenged in federal district courts – and will eventually find their way to the Supreme Court.

Saying that a Trump presidency would affect important issues like abortion rights is not fearmongering.

Go Trump, Go!!!

Oh, that he would!

Now that Pence has been selected for VP, even a Trump impeachment would be bad. Pence is like Cruz, he’s extremely conservative and has gotten legislation passed. I don’t know if Trump would work hard to do anything or if he’d just play golf all day, but Pence would do his best to get abortion and gay marriage to be illegal or at least as restricted as possible.

running coach:

Reagan actually appointed Scalia himself, as well as three other justices. Roe is still law of the land. Bush41 appointed two justices, one of whom is Clarence Thomas, aka Scalia’s sock puppet. Roe is still law of the land. Bush43 appointed two justices. Roe is still law of the land.

Yes, conservative state legislatures have tried to legislate back-door abortion restrictions. The courts have consistently ruled them unconstitutional. Even if Trump wins and gets to replace Scalia plus another justice or two, I see no reason to think Roe is in any serious danger on the federal court level. (Of course, what state legislatures do wouldn’t be in President Trump’s domain anyway.)

I agree with all of that. FTR, I didn’t compare Trump with GWB in this thread. When I’ve compared them in other discussions, I’ve expressed the same views that you have. GWB may have been a dumbass Texas village idiot, but he was a genius compared to Trump, and he was unquestionably well-intentioned and cared about his country. Trump is unreservedly an idiot with no mitigating qualities and cares only about himself.

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster here:

Happy Fun Ball, if you’re still tempted to step off that particular ledge, just wanted to remind you that Vladimir Putin called Trump “a really brilliant and talented person, without any doubt.” The DPRK (North Korea’s news/propaganda outfit) called him “a prescient presidential candidate.”

Just the thought of what are considered two of the world’s most dangerous leaders virtually cackling and rubbing their hands with glee over a Trump presidency is enough to give even the most insane person pause.
