Gobb is Pitted

Hey, you guys know WalterBishop is a troll too, right? Why are y’all responding to him? It’s just one troll defending another.

Actually, that was Eagle Scouts.

Isn’t Poe’s Law that trolling and honestly held extreme views are indistinguishable?

I don’t think so.

They must have heard about my Explorer Post, Tactical Air Control/Special Reconnaissance Exploring Field.

Stranger

Right, that is indeed what the quote in the movie specifically was. Of course, “Eagle Scouts” isn’t actually an organization, it’s a rank in Boy Scouts (now Scouts BSA).

Although confusingly, the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) is an organization, though a subsidiary of Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America).

(Not that I would expect an invading Cuban colonel to appreciate the difference.)

I’ve always considered him more of a bigoted-sealioning trock, but you’re right, engaging any part of that Venn Diagram of Stupidity is probably useless.

According to Wikipedia:

Poe’s law is an adage of Internet culture which says that, without a clear indicator of the author’s intent, any parodic or sarcastic expression of extreme views can be mistaken by some readers for a sincere expression of those views.

Trolling seems like it’d probably count.

Try that “fuck off” shit on r/AskHistorians, I dare you…
reddit isn’t one forum with an overarching set of rules like the Dope. Plenty of subreddits are heavily moderated, even more so than here, and several that are about academic topics do, in fact, expect citation.

Well knock me down with a feather! I am absolutely flabbergasted. Genuinely, I had no idea. I guess I’ve learned a valuable lesson about making assumptions. Consider my previous argument fully retracted.

I must say, stuff like this, however, makes it super hard to concede a point to you. Like, I’ve really had to work to swallow my pride here. Your first post in this thread was a total mischaracterisation of something you dug up from about two years ago, and when I pointed out the mischaracterisation you completely failed to acknowledge it, and yet I’m the one who’s dishonest?

It’s more that someone is likely to accidentally mistake sarcasm and parody toward a topic as an authentic view unless it’s explained. Trolling is purposeful insincerity. But unlike parody, the troll isn’t mocking the topic of discussion, but rather the sincerity of other posters.

I guess we could say that trolling purposely exploits Poe’s law, which typically describes accidental misunderstandings.

Honestly, that surprised me as well. I, too, considered it “common knowledge” that armed services personnel tended to lean Republican – that this fluctuates, and is never overwhelming, but durable enough that voting preferences would never favor a Democrat for president, say. Ignorance fought.

Even 40 years ago when I was in, it was true that DoD voters leaned R. But it was 60/40, not the 95/5 of popular assumption.

The “common knowledge” of the RW propaganda crew is that DoD is substantially 100% RW. Isn’t true and never was. Doesn’t stop them from repeating the lie.

Did his “Young Manly MAGA Men” thread get linked to yet? If anyone’s thinking “Oh, Gobb’s just misunderstood”, it’s full of why he’ll never be able to engage in an honest debate.

He clearly sees no difference between his opinions and objective truth. Hence, he’ll never be able to back up his claims.

If he can’t find or give cites, I’ll neither find or give fücks.

I have an opinion on MAGA cultists, and on Republicans in general. Based upon what I have seen in interviews and debates, it seems to me that MAGA cultists and Republicans are incapable of civil discourse. They ignore facts, and talk/shout over the other person. They’re like chimpanzees asserting dominance. Their only goal is to win. Solutions to problems are not on their agenda.

I’ve noticed him moving the goalpost (I know, shocking). He moved very quickly from the army should kill everything to the army should win the war. As everyone but he realizes, those are not always the same thing.

I think that’s an American thing, not just MAGA. Watch the House hearings with Mark Zuckerberg and AOC would talk over him when trying to answer … and not calling her out specifically because a lot of them do that. I know that with many people having debate there is a lot of not listening to the other person but rather thinking of your next point.

Most debates I ‘watch’ are here. It’s different here, and people generally seem to abide by the rules of debating as were.

Talking over him when he tried to answer, or interrupting him when he would do anything except actually answer the questions asked? Far too many officials called before Congress will not answer questions and instead repeat, over and over again, prepared speeches and phrases. If you ask me if a certain event happened and I respond with “As I have said many times, my cats are wet!”, have I answered the question?
