God, Clinton, won't you ever just go away?

Classic stuff, Shodan. Keep it coming!

Perhaps one of these hate-drunk Clinton bashers would please stand up and refute Clinton’s statements that the GOP has effectively used the Confederate flag as a rallying symbol, or that they much prefer it when blacks don’t vote as much?

Or perhaps they prefer to whine that Clinton’s still out there, exercising his right of free speech, with hundreds of thousands of voters eagerly hanging on every pearl of wisdom? And that depite every effort to the contrary he is still loved and respected by wide segments of the American people who remember so clearly how the Republicans squandered millions just to fuck him over?

Never happen … Hey I have an idea, trot out that old chestnut about the “lying under oath” thing again, ~* yawn *~

I’m english so i couldn’t give a stuff about Clinton, apart from wanting to know:

Is he Schtupping Demi Moore?

laughing loud and long

OK, that felt good. I needed that, Shodan, thanks!

I love seeing how Clinton riles conservatives. And they keep telling liberals to “let it go.” HA! This is great.

Well, if this helps take your mind off the fact that Republicans control both the Presidency and Congress and are in place to put in lots of new conservative judges…

No? What do YOU call it?

I stand corrected, but unfortunately I have concerns about THAT, too.

I never understood how Clinton could be accused of sexual harrassment toward a woman who was in no way employed by him, under his supervision or in danger of ANY kind of retaliation if she turned him down. All she had to do, supposing her version of the events is accurate, was say “No thank you.”

I do agree that Clinton’s behaviour with Lewinsky demeaned the country. I do NOT believe that having a raging libido can be equated with being a racist. Just my opinion. I also think I made it clear that I don’t think they had any right ASKING him the question, so I kind of don’t care that he lied…well, that isn’t exactly accurate…I CARE, I don’t LIKE it…but it certainly wasn’t a lie about anything to do with him being president, or governing the country. And as I have pointed out, many great legal minds don’t feel that it was LEGALLY a lie under oath.

One final note, then I am out of this discussion. I am pretty lousy at this kind of thing.

I have many republican friends, none of whom are racist and most of whom are apalled by Trent Lott and think he should be removed immediately. I am sure that there are many democrats out there who are racist. I don’t know any of them, thank the good God. This is not really about the republican party, it is about a single person who happens to be a republican and who is quite clearly (to me, at least) a racist.

It will only beCOME about the republican party if they allow him to remain in a position of power and authority in the party. At THAT point, I will have to wonder.

Which is most likely a moot point, as I don’t think there is ANY chance that the party will allow him to remain in his current position.

RTA, shouldn’t the person who makes an assertion have the burden of proof of demonstrating it? Bill Clinton offered no cites or examples of what he meant, nor have you RTA.

Some partisans have accused the Republican candidate Sonny Perdue of running on the issue of the Confederate flag in the Georgia gubinatorial election. It may be true that Democratic Gov. Roy Barnes of Georgia was voted out of office in part because of his efforts to remove the Confederate emblem from the state’s flag. However, Perdue never brought up the flag as an issue and ran no ads on the subject. This is more like a excuse the Dems offered for losing the election.

Furthermore it’s totally outrageous to attribute the Georgia situation to the entire GOP. It would be equally unfair to say the Democrats are foromer KKK members who still use the n-word, simply because this is true of Sen. Byrd.

Avalonian – maybe in your head, Reagan lied under oath. Nobody ever proved it. OTOH, Clinton admitted misleading under oath and accepted punishment for it. I have read that Nixon believed that his dirty tricks were no worse than JFK’s dirty tricks. So what? Nixon got caught. He fully deserved all his opprobrium.

700

And maybe in your head, O.J. didn’t kill his ex-wife and her boyfriend.

Are you really trying to say that it’s OK that Reagan most likely lied under oath, just because he didn’t get caught? Wow. Great moral stance there.

yeah, but that’ll change… the way things are going, conservatives are never going to let go of the fact that Clinton got away from them… this grudge will last until the End of All Things. laughs

Very amusing to watch.

Well, if I did what he did to a co-worker, I would rightfully be sued for sexual harassment, even if I wasn’t the employer, supervisor or in any way capable of retaliating against her if she were to reject me.

Part of the legal precedent when dealing with these cases is that it is permissible for the lawyer to ask about previous or ongoing cases of sexual behavior towards co-workers, which was why the Lewinsky question was ruled to be material by the judge in question. Hence, perjury.

Now…do I think the whole thing deserved to have all that hooplah surrounding it? Not at all. I think they should have just waited for his term to expire and then made a criminal prosecution after the fact.

Scotticher:

Sorry, but a three-judge panel disagrees with you on that score. Ken Starr never had carte blanche to poke his nose into Clinton’s personal affairs, any expansion of his investigation has to be - and was - approved by a panel of judges. And said panel found it to be relevant that Webb Hubbell was a man who was in a position to reveal damaging information about the Clintons and received money as payment for bogus “jobs” arranged by friends of Bill Clinton, and that a similar situation appeared to exist with Monica Lewinsky.

The above is a bare-bones explanation…but for an excellent detailed account of the investigation, read High Crimes and Misdemeanors by Ann Coulter. Yes, I know Coulter is heavily partisan, but that book really is a factual (with extensive footnoting), very accessible acount of the course of the Whitewater investigation and all that grew out of it.

Also…

Mmm, tasty. I love the frothing at the mouth Clinton hatred, because it makes my otherwise fine, fine, ideological opponents appear to be raving loons.

Merely appear, appear I say!

Apparently, the only time Clinton should be “allowed” to be in the Media spotlight is when he’s defending himself against the accusation of stealing ashtrays.

Airman, good news! I just ran into my neighbor, the big dog, and I spoke of your concerns. I said to him “BC (for that’s what his good friends call him) you gotta speak more often – it’s like a jump-start in the morning… and it drives this guy Airman Doors on the SDMB absolutely friggin’ nuts!!”

He says he “feels your pain.” Me too.

Paula Jones was a state employee and Clinton was Governor, so he had the power to reward or punish her.

No, I’m trying to say that bringing up this charge does nothing to defend Clinton.

Winning the battle and losing the war
Trent Lott’s resignation is a reminder that the Dems won the impeachment battle but lost the war – that is, the 2000 Presidential election. Furthermore Clinton’s self-promotion keeps the Democrats on the defensive. It’s a political adage that when you’re defending, you’re losing. Republicans are complaining about Bill Clinton, but Democrats the ones he’s damaging.

Compare the Dems and Clinton with the Reps and Lott. The Republicans lost the battle to keep Lott as majority leader. In fact, they werre mostly trying to push him out. As a result, they came out smelling like a rose, having taken a principled stand against racism. And Bill Frist will be a far more attractive spokesman as Senate leader. Frist could well be elected President in 2008.

And triple for Dubya.

And just which people are these?

Sorry, the above post was by me and not Bulova.

Snort. You have to resort to propping up the credibility of Ann Coulter to uphold an argument? What does that tell us? Try reading Joe Conason’s and Gene Lyons’ The Hunting of the President for an antidote.

Re the attempts by the GOP partisans to vindicate their own conduct in the matter, either by active cheering or by passive acceptance, by portraying Clinton’s conduct as harassment: Lewinsky flashed those thong panties at him first, and did not suffer consequences. Jones also did not suffer consequences. What else ya got, after 10 years of looking? Time to face it, gang - you were and are wrong both factually and morally.

For the Confederate Flag issue, or the racism issue generally, just consider Bush’s conduct in the South Carolina Primary. But that was caused by the lack of moral fiber in the country following Clinton’s blowjob, huh?

And if Clinton’s gonna accuse the Republicans of outright racism, he really oughtta have some evidence. His statement, such as it stands, would be ridiculed mercilessly here at the Straight Dope for it’s complete and utter lack of substantiation.

In fact, in the absence of evidence, I think the Republicans should be considering a slander suit against the SOB.

Folks, whether you love Clinton, hate Clinton, think he’s better than Republicans, worse than Republicans, a liar, a criminal, a good President, a good ex-President, whatever

—if you’re upset about publicity being given to his opinions, why are you mad at him? The linked article in the OP quotes his remarks as “given to CNN outside a business luncheon on Wednesday”. I presume that nobody is suggesting that Clinton hacked onto the CNN website and put up a fake article in order to sound off about Trent Lott. Instead, CNN deliberately sought his opinions and made a feature article about them. If this is what you find annoying—irrespective of any complaints you may have about the content of what he said—then why are you pissed at Clinton rather than CNN?

Ahhh…politics!

The petty sniping. The distortion of facts. The “character” assassination. The hidden agendas. The monied interests. The disenfranchised and marginalized. The thinly veiled lust for power. The blaming. The lies. The corruption. The utter, unmitigated bullshit.

“We the People” have elected and will continue to elect some utter shitbags to power in these great United States of America. We’ve also had a few outstanding individuals elected.

Look around you. The average person on the street is this country’s government. Is it really too much to understand that our elected officials have exactly the same faults as Joe and Jane Schmoe?
Ever had a friend disappoint you?

I genuinely thought Reagan was a nice man. He was “charming.” Frankly, he was also a disingenuous ideologue, to my (hindsight) way of thinking. His administration was responsible for some of the most heinous disregard of the law of any I can think of (Iran-Contra, which led to the killing of the Marines in the Beruit barracks by Iranian-backed terrorists (Semper Fi indeed, Ronnie and LtCol Ollie North)). But the senile old fuck also helped hasten the end of the Cold War. I have to give him that. I won’t say he won it, because I give far more praise to those dissidents that lived and died under that system, who risked everything they had for the end of that particular brand of tyranny.

Clinton? Can anyone really point to something he did that was really harmful to the country that other Presidents haven’t done? A lot of people squeal about “the dignity of the Presidency.” Well. Nixon fucked that up with his pshychotic reign, now didn’t he? He got some blowjobs outside of marriage and then lied about it. So? He said he “didn’t inhale” during his first Presidential campaign. So? He’s a bullshit artist, in other words, a politician. He came into office at a time when the nation was starting to recover from a recession and had some interesting foreign affairs: Somalia and Iraq. He inheirited this from previous administrations, like every administration before him did. Frankly, I don’t think he was much besides a “caretaker.” He was mediocre. Ho hum. All the rabid foam from the Right was and continues to be a contemptible display, as far as I’m concerned.

As far as the “racism” claims are concerned:
Well, any politician is going to whore themselves in any way they, or their “handlers,” see as necessary to get elected. Some are racist. Some aren’t. Average Joe and Jane Schmoe on the street.
