God damn you, [famous information service]

I am a college student with no research background in this area. You are my father’s tool.

YOU DO NOT BLUNTLY STATE ON YOUR MAIN PAGE HOW EXPENSIVE YOUR SERVICES ARE!

LET ME BE AS FRANK AS POSSIBLE: I AM NOW SCARED FOR MY LIFE ABOUT THE BILL THAT I POTENTIALLY RAN UP BEFORE I FOUND OUT HOW COSTLY SOME OF THOSE DOCUMENTS CAN BE!
H - O - L - Y - - S - H - I - T

i really want to cry.

Oh my god I just got off the horn with my dad and it could potentially be more than I even estimated.

jesus please kill me now. NOW.

this is related to that research paper you never started that you were just ranting about, right?

and you used some expensive reseach outlet for your sources…

which means that you probably got six or seven large papers, and burned through them trying to find relevant data…
so, depending on which pay-for-documents thing you’re using, and what subject you used it for, you just spent anywhere from :frowning: $200 :frowning: to :(:(:( $3,000 :(:(:frowning:

ouch. i hope it was on the lower edge of the scale, but from the way you’re writing, i guess it was probably towards the top… :frowning:

you need a hug.

(((chickenhead)))
and remember… it may seem incredibly horrible now, but if you keep your wits, it should all get better in time.

Call your credit card company and tell them your card got stolen.

Yeah, because committing fraud will really improve the situation, Oblong.

That bites, Chickenhead.

Here speaketh the Mom of someone who will be going to college next year (hopefully):

Kids screw up, Chickenhead, and their parents love them anyway.

–especially if the kid in question pays back the money. Give your dad a serious, adult, business-like IOU, and then put it at the top of your “earn money for this” list, bumping “pizza”, “beer”, and “women” way down to the bottom. Even if it takes you ten years to pay it back, it’s the thought that counts. Let him know you’re working on it, meanwhile.

I have to say that I question the validity of the debt. Unless you are warned beforehand or you can be reasonably expected to know the cost, how can you be laible? No way!

How are they going to charge you? Do they have a credit card number? If yes, why? If all they do is send you a bill you can fight it and I am quite sure you will come out on top.

Suppose after seeing a few web pages I get a bill saying “You owe us $1000 because you read our information”. Sorry, but no. I would most definitely dispute that bill. Most definitely. You are liable when you have agreed to pay the money in exchange for the service. If you did not agree then I would fight it.
I have been slammed a couple of times by the phone company and been presented with huge bills. You can be sure they never saw a dime. While I pay all my debts religiously I am not a sucker.

You can be layble and not liable… er… you know what I mean ^_*

Well, Chickenhead, what’s the outcome ?

How much is it ? Can you dispute it ? how long are you going to be raking your parents leaves for ?

Enquiring minds want to know…

There are some professional services that subscribe to such sites.

for example, in advertising, there are sites where agencies can buy images. They sign an agreement/contract which has the costs, etc. The agency is then billed for the images used. I can go to my SOs office, go to his computer and download a zillion pictures. You better believe the agency will be charged for each and every one of them, despite the fact that I am not an employee or what have you.
if chickenhead used, for example, a service registered to mom or dad’s law firm…well, he is shit out of luck. You can’t really dispute these things, especially if he was using it without permission.

Well, that’s a lot to assume but yes, you would be right. I assumed the contrary.

I suppose it would be irresponsible of me to mention that he could have just gone to http://www.be_a_plagiarist_and_buy_term_papers.com and got a great paper for only $8.95 per page. I think they take Visa or Mastercard. Could’ve saved Mom and Dad a few bucks anyway.
Seriously, Chickenhead, I don’t mean to make light of your situation. I think we’d all like to hear how things are progressing.

Fleudermaus,
Just a heads up- the mods usually really frown on promoting illegal stuff on here (as in plagerism, stealing of other people’s work). I would probably e-mail a mod if I were you and ask that they remove that link and explain that you had a bout of temporary insanity if I were you.

Just FYI!

Zette

Well, it’s not a working link (I feel whooshed!) but just so you know- we’ve had members here with work stolen and put on plagerist sites and it tends to be a sore subject.

Zette

Any chance you are referring to ‘Lawyer Crack’? That is how our Law Fellow described Lexis and Westlaw. They give it free to all of us law students. Westlaw even has a ‘rewards’ program whereby we accumulate points based on the number of times we use the service per week. Anyway, I am only into my first semester here, and I’m already completely hooked. I have no idea what I’m going to do when I get out into the real world and the client is expected to pay for the searches.
Going off to get my fix…

Rhythmdvl

sailor, this why I assumed
it was a prof. service. Because he got off the phone to talk with Dad.

he also says in the OP: you are my father’s tool.

[thread hihack on–sorry, Chickenhead]

Zette:

Well, I was trying to be funny…[sub]I guess trying is the operative word![/sub] I had just flashed back to my own experience a few months ago, helping my wife find some references for a theatre paper, and finding site after site that offered wonderful insight into the play Medea, along with a masterful comparison to King Lear–all for only $8.95 per page. It was a complete eye-opener to me. I knew these sites were out there, but I hadn’t realized how prevalent they were. It seemed like at least half of my search results ended up at paper-selling sites. Made me wonder how many people are actually turning in their turning in their own papers at the end of the day.

[hijack off]

Fledur,
I didn’t mean to come off as the board police, so thanks for taking that in the spirit in which is was intended. Very classy.

I know what you mean about researching papers and coming up with those sites- how aggravating is that? I am at a loss as to how they stay in business (It must be legal, but man, what a scam!)

Zette

. I have no idea what I’m going to do when I get out into the real world and the client is expected to pay for the searches.

Ummmm… bill them for it and then charge them your billable rate on top of it? Kind of how it’s done.

My guess? Along with the ones obtained illegally, there are more than a few written by poor college students who write well, and are more than willing to hand over their papers (or even write new ones) for a few bucks.
