I have RoadRunner-cable modem. I absolutely love it too.
Recently following an unfortunate run-in with the Snow White virus that resulted in a loss of about 500 mp3’s, my entire address book and untold e-mails and documents, I had to take my PC into the shop. He was unable to retrieve anything cause there was over 2.3 gigs of corrupted files. Finally had to completely reformat the disc so I had my whole 'puter upgraded. Installed a cd-r drive, a dvd drive,(purchased on E-bay), a bigger tower and had 128 of RAM added. Then a few weeks later I upgraded to Windows ME(can’t really tell much diference tho) and got RoadRunner as soon as it became available. It is truly a brand new system. I love it.
With my 56k modem internet radio was out of the question. Now I can listen to all kinds of stuff while downloading 10 songs at a time if I wish.
I used to have DSL. Now I’m a firm believer in the power of cable. On some sites, I can get 250 KB/sec sustained transfer rates. Take that, DSL weenies!
I had DSL for three days. The best three days of my life. Then the landlord said that I was electrically shorting the house with it. And I still can’t get cable. Hmm. I’m going to see about that USB DSL modem.
I love my DSL. I’ve had it for about 16 months now. I’m going to be moving in a few months, so I may need to go back to dial up for a short while, and it might kill me. I get sustained transfer rates of 140KB/sec any time of day, from any decent server. Just a slight improvement from the 5KB/sec you get with a 56kbps modem. The best part about my DSL is that it’s 1.28Mbps down / 384 kbps up, for only $35 a month. Hard to beat that price.
astro: Thank you for that clarification. However, I am not getting a cable modem (unless I wait until January, when it is supposed to become available in my area), I am getting ADSL. Where does that fit in?
Where I live, there’s a better chance of my dogs winning a limbo contest dressed as Celine Dion and George Michael (say, where is he these days?) than getting DSL service.
Cable may be an option someday. Our cable company, gods bless their little hearts, says cable modem service might be coming someday. They’ve been promising it for two years now. We’ve had the ability to get digital cable for a while now, and according to my sources in the cable industry, this means that the distribution system has all the upgrades required for internet service. You’d think that the second largest cable system in the country (CONCAST) would have it already. Our neighbors across the river with Bob’s Discount cable have had broadband for over a year. Really twists my goat.
What really gets me is that all the groundwork is in place. I’ve actually got my wife telling me that when it’s available I can have it, an argument that took years to win. Until then I’m stranded at 45.3. Sigh.
