Amber in Treasury it sounds like you’re making a Reverse Chronological Resume. Where you list your work history and such.
In your case you’d be better off with a Functional Resume. Basically a Functional just lists yours skills, accomplishments, without dates, and histories. It’s great for people with gaps in their work history.

Although it’s a pretty bland template IMO, hopefully it should show you what I mean better.
Amber, my wife and I have played this and, as I assume you are female, you have it all over us guys, who are expected to keep working until the end of the day after a loved one dies.
It’s simple: your mother/father/other relative was terminally ill and you cared for them until they died. No mention of anything else is required or necessary.
IME depression and anxiety (my life-long problems) have been decriminalized in the past decade or so, at least in my little corner of the US. And with the global economic meltdown, I’m fairly sure that employers are going to have to get in the habit of hiring people who’ve got gaps in their resumes.
My advice: don’t hide it, but don’t volunteer it, either. I think it’s reasonable to say something that’s correct, yet relatively ambiguous. Or just something like, “I had some chaos in my teens and needed to get my act together before being able to move on.” I strongly advise you not to say something that’s an outright lie; that sort of thing can blow up in your face.
In the US, do not ever ever EVER EVER lie on an application or resume. If found out, you will probably be shuffled out the door so fast your head will spin AND it’s generally considered termination with cause so no unemployment benefits. God, I wouldn’t be surprised if there could be additional nastiness from it.
Spin is fine. Lies are a mistake.

Couldn’t agree more. Don’t lie, it will come back to bite you and the consequences won’t be pretty.
