Godspeed, HMS Scylla, you will be missed. (not about the SDMB Poster)

HMS Scylla sunk to create artificial reef.

I knew he was a big guy, but I had no idea.

Crimeny, Mr. Moto, you almost gave me a heart attack. Shouldn’t you have put “Not the poster” in your thread title?

Don’t scare me like that. I thought we’d lost another doper.

bows head in a moment of seemingly reverent silence while thinking, “Won’t the divers be surprised when they open the cabin door…”

Nope, just one of your Leander class frigates.

I actually rode a Leander for about a week. It was one that had been sold to Ecuador and renamed the Moran Valverde. This was back in 1996, when I was in the Navy.

Fun times.

and find Nazi Groundhog?

s. GroundhogS!

My first thought was that the SDMB Liberal Conspirators© got another conservative banned. DAMN YOU SDMBLC!!!

I hope this new title clarifies matters.

Sorry, Coldfire. I knew I was close to the line there.

Though the thread title was 100% accurate.

Already Scylla is a major tourist attraction. She is expected to bring millions of pounds to the local economy.

Up to 300 people a day are swimming around Scylla’s wrecked form.

I don’t know why there’s wailing and whining about this over there. As a former naval historian and a free diver, I think this kind of thing is great. The ship wasn’t worth using in the RN anymore, would they have preferred that it get sent to the breakers or sold to Paraguay or something? As it is, the Scylla helps the environment and tourism – it is still benefiting the British people. I wouldn’t say its common over here to create such artificial reefs, but the similar use of the former USS Speigel Grove was enthusiastically welcomed.

They’ve been doing this here in BC waters for a while now:

There are 4 ex-Canadian Navy DDEs, one former Liberty Ship, and a coastal freighter on the bottom here, and they do attract a lot of tourist divers (as well as locals).

I see on the above website that the Artifical Reef Society is preparing a Boeing 737 for their next sinking!

I’m guessing there’s a classicist somewhere involved in these plans - the appropriateness of making a reef out of Scylla is just too much to be believed coincidence.

Since Paraguay is a land locked country, it would have been very interesting to see what they would have done with a frigate… :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t know, sail it up the Parana river, maybe?

Paraguay actually has a small Navy/river patrol, but the deepest draft vessel they have draws 2.6 meters, and the Leanders draw 4.2, so it might not even make it upriver.

Ok, Ok, so I meant to say Uraguay. I wasn’t seriously suggesting it. But in the interests of accuracy, there you go.

I’ve never really been a big fan of sinking decommisioned warships for reefs. Here in Australia it seems that every time you turn around there’s another ship being sent to the bottom.

I know there would be practical/financial considerations but I think it would be great if more old warships were turned into museums (like HMAS VAMPIRE at the Australian Maritime Museum, for those of you who’ve been there). I can hardly imagine how fantastic it would be thirty years from now to be able to again walk down the passageways of a ship I’ve served in…

um…

anyone seen Scylla? Last I heard, he was scuba diving in Whitsand Bay…

Oh yes?, well in that case we don´t need no stinking frigate anyway!, we´re already getting our own pocket battleship

P.S. Just wondering… could you give us the exact coordinates of where the Scylla is laying?, and, does it have too many holes to patch?
