GoG re-releasing TIE Fighter and X-Wing

So, apparently Good Old Games is re-releasing two of the best PC games ever in a form that will be playable on modern OSes.

I for one am stoked. I am not a gamer at all, but this tickles my nostalgia bone in a big way.

Supposedly each game will be the special edition with slightly updated graphics and expansion packs included and they’ll cost $10 each.

So two questions. Are you as excited as I am? And, please recommend a joystick for me to buy ASAP.

Ah, TIE Fighter. Climbing up the Imperial Navy ladder while crushing rebel scum.

Good times.

I’ll certainly give it a look.

Would be more tempted if there wasn’t the new implementation of Elite now in beta

Brian

would be more interested if it’s more than just “slightly”. i am sure the game looks better in my memory than for real.

No game holds a place in my memory quite like TIE Fighter does. I’ll be buying the crap out of this, outdated graphics or not.

I also require a joystick. Holy crap.

I third needing a joystick, as I finally got rid of my old non-USB Sidewinder (it had an adapter to USB) after years of not using it.

Just ordered a basic USB joystick for $20 on Amazon.

I remember the days when joysticks had their own port, inexplicably located on the sound card… sigh. What a wonderful world we live in.

The EMPIRE is on the VERGE of SUCCESS !

WHAT? Where? Gimme!

Thanks.

I was really excited to hear that TIE Fighter would be re-released and suddenly I don’t care at all. Or won’t for a while.

I remember back in high school, my best friend and I were in a computer store, and one of the computers was running X-Wing as a demo. So he sit down and played, and quickly got to one of the copy-protection questions (asking you for a particular word from a particular page of the manual). Which he proceeded to guess, correctly, on the first try.

I loved X Wing. I never quite warmed up to TIE fighter but I think back then I needed a better processor. (I think I had a 486 DX but no enough RAM to really play the game)

Forgive the stupid question, but I’m pretty sure the last time I played any video games was on a P4 running Windows 95. Is there any reason I can’t play these games on a MacBook if I boot to Windows 7 using Boot Camp?

I haven’t played a computer game for 10 years, but I, too, am excited to play X-Wing/Tie Fighter again.

I’m also interested in joystick recommendations… preferably in the $50ish range or less.

Didn’t play X-Wing but I played the heck out of TIE Fighter. Heck I spent hours and hours just with the Demo.

I’m pretty sure that would work fine. These games will run on pretty much any GPU supported by a modern OS.

I’ve been using this baby Amazon.com: Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X (Compatible with PC)

With Elite dangerousn and having a lto of fun. Will probably upgrade to a better set once Elite goes out o f beta though, but for now, it’s a really nice little HOTAS setup.

I loved the games back in the day, but every time I’ve tried to go back and play old games for the sake of nostalgia the outdated graphics and bad UIs etc have squashed my desire to play within 30 minutes, even with games I used to play for ridiculous amounts of time like EQ1. I guess I just don’t have a working nostalgia bone in my body. Hope you all others will enjoy them, though.
