Going Clear, Alex Gibney's new documentary about Scientology

This movie just keeps chugging along!

Going Clear will be available to HBO Canada subscribers on September 6. Finally!

A theater in Clearwater will be playing the movie sometime in October. Brave brave brave!

American Airlines is now showing Going Clear on some transatlantic flights. London to New York for sure. United is now or soon will be showing it on some flights.

Oo, what theatre? I live close to Clearwater, I’d love to take a large contingent and go!

This was Alex Gibney’s tweet yesterday:

He included a link but it only went to the current show times. You should call the theater for the date, and to show your support. They’re probably getting massive shit from the Scienos, which will only get worse and worse as the time gets closer. The Scienos probably have PIs digging for dirt/Dead Agenting material on the owner, managers & possibly other employees. Really, the theater needs to hear positive feedback, as much as possible. Everyone’s curious about whether the theater will go through with the showing, and even if it does, if Clearwater residents will be too intimidated to go.

If the theater doesn’t buckle under the pressure, and it really does show, please report back on crowd & atmosphere. Great that you would be taking friends! When you find actual dates, please post. I’ll tweet them out.

A heads up for those interested: Louis Theroux’s documentary has a name and a first look date:

My Scientology Movie to premiere at London Film Festival

Someone needs to arrange for free screenings of the Going Clear in the grass verge field next to the parking lot on the northwest corner of the San Jacinto College campus. With the screen facing south, so that anyone driving in the direction of Gold Base will be able to catch a glimpse of it. Just once a week, on Friday night.

Note that the Countryside movie theaters are quite a few miles–eight or nine–away from the Clearwater Scientology headquarters/complex. It’s possible that this may not be “a thing” at all.

That would be fun. I don’t think the citizens of Hemet like the Scientologists in their midst any more than the citizens of Clearwater.

I didn’t know how close or far it was, but I’ll bet 100 miles away would be too close for the Scienos.

Question: How many people (outside the UK) have either never heard of or are only vaguely aware of Louis Theroux? I’m having a debate on Twitter. A guy tells me that Theroux is massively famous (“he has over a million followers on Twitter!”) and I agree, he is famous. In the UK, where he’s been on TV a lot over the years. But in America? Not so much. Not that no Americans have ever heard of him. He has his fans here, but in general. No, I don’t think so. Am I out of touch and wrong? If you stopped people on the street in any average American city and asked them, would a goodly number know the name?

I’d wager the vast majority of Americans would be in the “never heard of him” category. I say that after I googled his name.

I confuse him with Paul Theroux who until just now I didn’t know was the filmmaker’s dad. Talented family.

Put me down as a “no.”

Thanks. Maybe his movie will make him better-known in the US. More important is it chipping away at the cult in the UK. Scn is tax-exempt in the UK too and an outpouring of protest there could have a real impact in the UK, unlike the US. It’s bound to make both a short-term and long-term splash there. I just hope it plays in the US, though it might just hit art houses in the bigger cities.

Canadians, Going Clear will finally start airing on HBO Canada this Sunday night. It played in some theaters but not many, so I hope it gets a good viewership. Tell your friends & family with HBO.

I just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS to Going Clear for winning the Writing, Directing and Best Documentary Emmys tonight! I wish these awards had been shown on the upcoming main Prime Time broadcast, but what can you do? There are about a thousand categories (seems like) and just as with the Grammies, they have to split the ceremonies up. Still, winning the 3 most important documentary awards is pretty great!

For Going Clear, this is only the start of awards season!

I guess it was too good to be true. The cult got to somebody.

Available on demand on HBO. Miscavage is a fucking psychopath.

I’m with you there, but I’d be very angry if they intimidated my local theater into not showing it. I’ve seen it 4 times through coughillegalcough streaming (hey, I don’t have HBO) but I’m really looking forward to seeing it on the BIG screen with an audience. This is not the first time they’ve done this. They intimidated the theater in the city in England where Scn has their “Spiritual headquarters” (snort) into not showing it. They’re bullies.

Just finished watching this 10 minutes ago. Horrifying movie. I weep for anyone whose family is involved.

That is a very understandable reaction.

I will not trouble you with my tale of woe - except to say that I was briefly involved with these cretins and … if any of the horrible things you have ever heard about them are not true … it is only because they are worse … far, far worse.

They have studied the monetary aspects of their business down to the penny. They know exactly when, what, how and why to act in one way over another in order to get as much money as they can out of your possession and into their possession.

There is absolutely positively (Never, Ever, Ever) any regard for how they hurt families. That simply does not ever enter into their business formulas.

But, it seems to me there must be a way we can do more than weep for people who have been run over (or mowed down or any one of many other adjectives to describe lives that have forever been wrecked). For anyone who watched this film, I’m quite certain that you saw how people who got involved with these criminals had their lives forever wrecked. They will do anything and everything to get that penny out of your pocket and into their pocket.

So … what can be done? My guess is that we (the people who file class action lawsuits) should use the exact same strategy that they use. We need to bury them in a deluge of law suits.

Do you remember how they filed unbelievable amounts of lawsuits against the officers and individuals of the IRS? Well, I’m guessing that is the very best strategy that we can use to put them out of business. We need to sue the bleep out of them until the result is that they have no time left to do anything else except deal with all the lawsuits they are facing.

Shame on the cowardly IRS for giving up and cowtowing to them and their lawsuits. I’m guessing that when that happened, they felt empowered to do anything they wanted. They felt as if they were running the world and no one could do anything to stop them. What a tragedy that was! Shame! Shame! Shame! Surely there must be some org that will stand up to these creeps and see they go to prison where they belong.

I just hope that anyone who does now know why I am reacting in such an angry manner will find a little background info that describes just how they destroy families so that they can buy more real estate and become more powerful. It is a viscous circle. They destroy families by taking all their money so that they can buy more real estate and become more powerful.

They have found a winning formula and this Miscaviage villian needs to be stopped for once and for all.

If you believe that we are the most powerful people in the world (excuse me while I laugh for a sec), then we really need to use that power to stop these people. They are killing us. Really. They are killing us by taking all our money and it seems there is no one willing to stand up to them and stop them.

I agree and I’m sorry you were hurt by them. They absolutely need to be stopped. They need to be “fair game”.

Why isn’t this movie on Netflix yet? If it’s not on Netflix it may as well not exist. :stuck_out_tongue:
