Going From Long Hair to Short Hair

Go to the place next door and talk to them! I’m sure they’d love to have your business, and would be more than willing to help.

Can I tell my hair story? Many moons ago(thirty three years) when I was divorced, I had long hair, as my ex liked long hair. So after the divorce, when we met for the last time at the real estate agents office(selling the house) I hurried to a recommended salon and had my hair whacked off into a short bob. So the last time he ever saw me was with short hair.

 I just had my hair cut a week ago. The hairdresser and I celebrated the thirty third anniversary of my first cut with her!)

Or just washed, combed, and let to air-dry until you’re ready to put it in a ponytail. For years I had hair (straight, fine) long enough to sit on. Now I have it shoulder-length and it’s more work.

Why not shave it all off and have a set of wigs with varying lengths of hair?

This made me smile because I did something similar. I always wore my hair long when I was married, usually between waist length and mid-back length. My ex would whine if I cut it any shorter. (Just one of the many reasons I divorced him. :D)

I cut it to shoulder length as soon as I left him, then gradually stepped up to chin length and now the super-short cut I have today.

I have very wavy hair, and cutting it off meant I didn’t have to fight my hair as much to make it lay the way I want it to. Sometimes I have to take a curling iron to a section that sticks up, but that’s usually when it starts getting too long. Otherwise, a little dab of gel, a quick blast with a blow-dryer, and I’m good to go.

My haircut is similar to the Judi Dench pics that slumtrimpet linked to, but I have longer bangs to hide my massive forehead. I have more of a heart-shaped face, and if I don’t have long bangs all you see is forehead.

I’m in the photo gallery if you’re curious, but it’s more of a profile view so you can’t see my bangs as well.

No, hon, it only needs washing, conditioning, and brushing. Blow-drying is actually terrible if you want long hair as it inevitably damages the hair. That doesn’t matter so much with a short cut where the end of the hair shaft is, at most, a year old. With waist-length hair the ends are years old and have had to endure all sorts of wear and tear. Many women who claim their hair won’t grow past a certain length are mistaken - it will grow longer, but if you insist on constantly blow-drying it, it becomes fragile and the hair breaks off, thus keeping the maximum length at a certain point.

Can’t afford wigs.

Also, if you want your wigs to look at all decent they require just as much, if not more, maintenance than your own grown hair.

If you do get it chopped , make sure to ask your stylist about http://www.locksoflove.org/ before the chopping begins.
I understand that they use donated hair to make wigs for children undergoing chemo and such.

I sometimes think I need to get a grown-up haircut, but then I think about how easy my long hair is (almost sit-on-able at this point).

I wash & condition it every 2 to 3 days, braid it, let it dry, comb it out. Since I mostly take evening showers, I braid it, sleep on it, and brush it out in the morning. So easy. I have bangs too and those I give a quick rinse to in the sink if they get funky looking.

It’s not so much a fashion statement as the fact that I’m lazy and I hate having to go to a salon.

As I said above, I have very long hair, and I have for many many years. It’s also very thick.

I am amazed at just how many complete strangers have come up to say “oh your hair is gorgeous! You should donate it to Locks Of Love…” and then proceed to tell me all about the organization. :dubious: Thanks, yes, I know about the program and I think it’s a wonderful thing. But I don’t want to cut my hair just yet. When I do I will certainly donate it, but right now I like my hair the way it is, thanks.
I’ve actually had people get mad at me because I show no signs of dashing off to do as they suggest! People iz weird.

I’ve been donating to Locks of Love every two-three years for over a decade now. But I’m sure others will use the link, too.

It only needs that if it’s nice and thick and of a medium or coarse texture. If it’s fine, like mine and Sparky’s, you gotta do shit to it, or else it just…flops there, and starts looking stringy about an hour after you brush it.

I am so happy to see this thread because I am going thru the should I cut stage right now.

BF says no way (what IS it with men and long hair?), but the fact is, I am over 55 now, and this is becoming silly to me.

I get up at 3:30, hit the gym, shower, and get to work with wet hair, which I put in a clippie until it’s dry-ish. No one is in my offices at 6am, when I start work. Wash 2x a week, condition daily. No matter how hard I try, my hair always ends up pulled back in some form or another.

My hair is referred to in my family, as a horse’s tail. Straight as a stick (I could tell you the Dippity Do & 12 hrs. of brush rollers story for my Junior prom, but you can imagine.)

I just don’t see how I can find the time to even blow dry it; when I do, it looks nice, but I resent the time I spend doing it, and I am not getting up earlier to do that. Also, I color it, and I know that blow drying is so hard on hair, esp. colored hair.

And somewhat like the OP, I have a large face, and a high forehead, which I “hide” with bangs. I also have a cowlick at either side of my bangs.

Dammit.

I think my hair is due for the short-short cut. I really do not want to deal with it this summer. I go on a 5-10 year cycle of growing it out and cutting it off. Right now it’s just below shoulder level and a good length for putting it in a twist or bun. It’s got a small wave pattern, so lots of body that works well with it 2-3 inches. I don’t do product as I’m allergic to all that, and blow drying will give me a massive fro.

I aim to try for a salon cut, but sometimes I just cut it at home (and the stylist yells at me next time I go in:D). I like the pixie cut that emphasizes cheekbones, maybe just above ear level. I’m just tired of fussing with it, too, even though it’s just brushing it out and putting on a clip.

here are some examples. the last hair cut i had i went with a version of kate bracken’s hair cut. picture 8 with anne hathaway is a version of that cut. with you hair being straight, and non fly away you would be able to not have to use a blow dryer.

Mine bugs me to keep in short.

Yeah, my hair has been long almost all of our 28yrs together, but I know he’d prefer it short.

I don’t care, it’s my hair, not his! Also long and lazy is for me. When it’s short I have to wash and style it everyday to cover the wretched bed head! Long could not be easier for me! No product, beyond shampoo, no colouring, perming, straightening or curling required, no expensive haircuts every six weeks! Sign me up!

I like a lot of those, thanks.

Although the captions make me think the site was sponsored by hair product and flat iron companies!

Those work better for very slender women, IMHO. Why not have the husband help decide?

What about something like this?

Seems low maintenance, you could still pull it back at work, but it wouldn’t be such a scalping hazard.

Husband has opted not to voice his opinion. Says it’s entirely up to me. I suspect he doesn’t want to risk blame for a result I might not like.

Hi there!
I had short hair since I was 13( Louise brooks bob) and right now I’m growing out my hair. Short hair is wonderful and pretty low maintenance( depending on the cut).
Here is my advice
Do spend time on Google images or pinterest and try to find some haircuts you like.
Ask a friend, relative, etc for some opinions.
Do ask the hairstylist.
Even googling “Hairstyles for broad and square faces” can be helpful.
