Going Grey, No Dye Suggestions

Here’s my story:

I am a natural blonde, I was born that way. In the course of my formative years my hair darkened. When I was sixteen years old I decided to help nature out and I bleached my hair. Think Loni Anderson in the WKRP heydey and that was me.

I looked hot in my day, and Og help you if you say I didn’t, but there came a time when I felt I was too old for the platinum goddess look. I decided to throw caution to the wind and let my natural color prevail(what color was that anyway?).

So, let us fast forward two years and hair growth that is all natural now, including gray. It disturbs me because my husband, who has never commented on my ever expanding ass or my sagging boobs, upon seeing my head exclaimed “Oh my god,you have grey hairs”.

I am growing my hair out again and it is very long. Dyeing it would be a bitch. If there is some way to cover grey hairs without dyeing I would so love to hear it. I really do not want to start dyeing again if I can help it.

My girlfriend has been “Barbara Bush White” since her early 40s. She didn’t want that hard flat color look. She has been doing reverse highlights, i.e., putting in the dark color and leaving just a hint of gray. It looks very natural. I don’t think there’s a way around doing some sort of color, but highlighting will be less frequent. Good luck!

Well, there are some colored shampoos, but I doubt they’re strong enough to cover grey.

Um…how do you feel about scarves?

When my mother started greying, she switched from all-over color to highlighting. It lightens enough of the strands that you can’t really tell what is grey and what is light blond highlights. Highlights need to be done only about every 3 months, and when you’re ready to stop coloring entirely, the roots they leave behind aren’t as obvious as those from all-over color.

My hair is 4 inches past my brastrap (ish), and I use a home kit with a cap. It’s also pretty affordable in the salon, especially considering you don’t have to do it every month.

Heh, I use that Pantene Blonde Highlights shampoo. It works, I have mucho highlighting and it looks great, problem is it does not cover grey. Mucho saddo.

WhyNot A scarf is good for bad hair days, but I like my hair(oh my god did I say that?) without one. I just do not want to be grey.

And I am still sorry that I cannot get the codes right

So what’s wrong with going grey?

I respect, nay admire, women who can settle for being themselves.

I would love to let my hair go grey. I’ve got very dark brown hair, and my grey is coming in a lovely silvery colour. But my husband insists I dye it, so dye it I do.

There’s a woman who works in my building that has hair past her shoulders. Black with strands of white mixed in. It’s very attractive. So - first suggestion - just go gray.

Despite my opinion, my wife home dyes her hair, (which is shoulder length, even longer when the myriad curls are straighten out). Two of the last three times I did it for her - her mother did it the last time.

It’s not really that hard, I found - just a matter of being thorough.

So - my suggestion - if it bothers your husband then get his help to color it. I’d suggest a color very close to your natural color - mistakes show much less.

Buy two color kits if you’ve got lots and lots of hair.

Justine I am not going to tell you what to do , but I do not want you to take lessons from your husband, You should do what you want. Period.

I keep hearing from my relatives that grey is groovy but I’m not buying it. No disrespect to grey hairs, but it it’s not my style. I know some women look great that way but i can’t deal. I do not want grey,.

I keep waiting for the grey to start. My grandmothers both got gorgeous hair - one silver grey and one white. I’d be delighted with either. But, no, still mousy brownish blondish. Too bad I can’t dye my hair silver!

I stopped coloring my hair almost two years ago. I have dark hair with a fair amount of silver in it. I cannot tell you how much I LOVE my hair! In direct sunlight, it really shimmers. Sometimes I just gawk at my own hair (which makes me sound both retarded and narcissistic) because I do like it that much.

I realize coloring your hair is a personal decision for women and I don’t judge those who aren’t comfortable going gray (or silver as the case may be). Just know if you choose not to color your hair and I meet you, I’ll almost certainly tell you how great it looks.

Celeste Talbert: I realize I’m not a young woman; however… could you PLEASE point out to our new costume designer …- that I don’t feel quite right in a turban. What I feel like is GLORIA FUCKING SWANSON! What am I, 70, David? Am I 70? Why don’t you just put me in a walker? Buy a goddamn walker and put me in it!

God damn you Gigi I wanted to be the first to do the Gloria Fucking Swanson Turban of Hell. Oh, well , shit.

I’m with you. I don’t have any gray, but if I did, I would dye my hair. I have no problem with those who choose to go the natural route, but that route ain’t me.

I have dark hair and have great results with John Frieda’s Color Glaze. It basically gets me through the last week or so before I get my hair colored and completely covers the gray… You put it on in the shower and rinse after 3 minutes.

He makes a version for blondes that you could try. It’s very, very subtle…

Speaking as a young (25) man who isn’t particularly into older women (ie. any more than women my own age, anyway) I think grey hair is hot. Not all grey, but a few streaks. Hawt.

I too found after many years of coloring my hair, that when I went natural I have a lot of gray. It’s an ugly gray though. Kinda like washed out gray. I have found the easiest way to take care of it is to color my hair my natural shade, and then I use a touch up root kit every so often.

When I first started going grey, oh god many, many years ago, I simply let it go grey and started using a blueing agent. I wish I could provide you with a brand name but I have long forgotten what they were. Frankly, I am not sure if people still do this nowadays. If you decide to try this, go to a professional at least for the first time. That way, you would know how it should look and get tips on future self-applications.

Okay so right now my options are keep my nice long hair and deal with the grey, or cut it and dye it.

I’m liking my long hair right now if only to use my pretty barettes that I purchased this summer. I really want to wear them but I want to cut my hair too. I’m torn.

Yeah, I wonder how many African orphans are sitting arounnd wondering, geez, how the hell is Abby doing with that hair stuff? Gosh it’’'s so important to her.

I’ve seen a lot of blondes lately with the reverse highlights deal and it looks great.

Personally, my plan is to go gray naturally; my mother says I’ll change my tune once I start getting really gray and it makes me feel old. Maybe. I’ve just got a few stray gray hairs now and I sort of like it. To me, it’s interesting to see what times does to something as familiar as one’s own body and face.
