In a couple weeks, by best buddy and I are hitting the road for our 21st annual Baseball Trip, in which we travel from town to town seeing Minor and Major League baseball games.
We spend exactly one night in each city, go to the ball game and hit the local watering holes.
We also like to seek out interesting things to do in the afternoons (usually we’re able to hit town with a few hours to kill before game time) or places to stop along the way.
So I’m turning to the Dopers for any suggestions you may have regarding what we should do or see in, around, or between the following cities:
Indianapolis, IN
Columbus, OH
Charleston, WV
Washington, DC
Atlantic City, NJ
Lancaster, PA
Hagerstown, MD
Bristol, VA
and Bowling Green, KY
Driving from Columbus to Charleston, you’re going right by SerpentMound, the largest and best preserved serpent effigy in the country, maybe 3000 years old. How can you miss that?
For a local watering hole, The Slippery Noodle downtown bills itself as “the oldest bar in Indianapolis”. It’s within walking distance of the stadium, and has live jazz every night. If you’re in on a Friday, there’s a great German beergarten called the Rathskeller that I would also recommend. For a day activity, King Tut is in town at the Children’s Museum. For free, I think there are daily tours of Lucas Oil Stadium, the Colts’ new stadium monstrosity.
After the Nationals game, take the Metro to the U St. stop on the green/yellow line and head west. You ought to be able to find a watering hole along there!
Columbus has a replica of the Santa Maria of the city’s namesake.
Bowling Green has not only the Corvette Museum, but also the assembly plant, where you can take a tour. I also like Kentucky Down Under, in Horse Cave, an Australia-themed park with a cave underneath.
Lancaster is Amish Country, very close to Hershey Park/Hershey’s Chocolate World, and the Choo-Choo Barn in nearby Strasburg is great as well.
