Going to the States for the first time (New York)

My SO loves his beer, and apparently Bud’s tasteless and Rolling Rock’s the worst beer ever, but he’s had some good American beer as well, and he’s quite excited to try out some more. There’s a microbrewery/brewpub here in town that he really loves so we have to find one over there. Any one in particular you know about? He takes his beer seriously, I like Czech lager (the real Bud  and Pilsner Urquell).

Does anyone know a good bar and/or a decent place to eat in the area around the Hilton hotel (just south of Central Park between West 53rd and 54th)? The conference is taking place there and the guys would like somewhere nice not too far away for breaks.

Oh, and the suit: He can spend about $5-600, preferably something originally a bit pricier, but on sale. Would Century 21 be a good place for something like that or are there any better suggestions?

5-600 dollars American or Euros. The dollar is pretty weak against the Euro right now.

As far as places to eat go, bring a rock with you. When you leave your hotel, throw it. You’ll hit a place to eat.

That area of town has tons of places to eat, from Hooters to Ruth’s Chris’ Steak House and just about everything in between.

I’ll look in my NFT book for you later.

I meant American dollars.

There’s a Russian place on 45th and 8th avenue called Uncle Vanya’s. It’s kind of small, so call ahead if you have a big party. In the evenings, they have a drunk accordion player playing and singing off-key. Yay!

I do actually cook for myself and eat at home sometimes, thanks for asking.

At Century 21, last time I was there, you couldn’t try anything on, so keep that in mind. It was also very hit or miss. Sometimes you find crap, sometimes you find something great.

I’d have thought all you could find were nauseating gold/yellow blazers!

Lots of good advice here. Two corrections:

I’d save Century 21 for a weekend day, when downtown Manhattan is EMPTY. Any time you go there during a weekday, it will be crowded, unless you’re there right before they close.

TKTS is either “tickets” or T.K.T.S. If you say “ticks” as someone mentioned upthread, you will get laughed at

If you say “ticks” to a theatre fan, they will not laugh at you, but will immediately know what you are talking about.

They have dressing rooms. They are crowded and kind of concentrated in one area.

I pronounce TKTS by saying each letter. Every New Yorker I know pronounces it that way. Some of them are quite the theatre fan/professional working in theatre.

I’ve never heard anyone pronounce it “ticks.” Every time I have ever heard someone say it, it has been by saying each letter; “tee-kay-tee-ess.”
