Going to Vegas!! Where to stay, what to see, do and don't

I’ve only seen Mystere but I don’t think you can go wrong with any Cirque de Soleil show. If you have a car you may consider an off strip hotel as you can get some good deals. We went for a social group gathering at Terribles last year, which is on the boulder highway. The best way I can describe it is a redneck version of the Bellagio - the hourly laser show has animatronic wildlife  The rooms are nicer than some strip places I’ve stayed like Imperial Palace which was a definate thumbs down. It’s been a few years but IIRC Crazy Horse Too was the best titty bar. Glitter Gulch was kind of a snore and had a big cover charge. The Guinness Museum is sucks ass with the highest vacuum of any place in Vegas. Circus Circus has probably the worst buffest of any big place.

Good deals, maybe, but IMO it’s a false economy. The money you save probably isn’t worth losing the ability to get back to your room by just hopping on an elevator, or taking a short cab ride. If you’ve always got to think about The Drive Back To The Hotel, then you’re not really at the party. And the Strip is one party you want to be at.

Man, Glitter Gulch. What a name for a shitty strip club. We went in there, (back then it was 2 drink minimum, no cover) while waiting on some buddies to get downtown.

The waitress comes up and asks us what drinks we’ll be having, we got 2 Buds a piece. $6.25 each! $25 friggin’ dollars for 4 beers. Went up and sat at the bar and a “lady” comes up and starts talking to us. She orders an Absolut and cranberry.

We talk for a bit and decide to go get a table (just me and my buddy, mainly to get away from the “lady”). The “lady” tells me I forgot to pay for her drink. I told the “lady” I just dropped $25 on 4 beers, I bet her drink was $15 and I wasn’t paying for it.

She calls to one of the girls dancing (who was actually in the middle of a set) to come over. It was her daughter! She got the money for her drink out of her daughter’s G-String!

We go set at the table and no more than get sat down when a bouncer comes over and tells us we have to leave for being tightwad pricks.

I was very, very glad to oblige.

Agreed.

The Monte Carlo is my Vegas hotel of choice. It’s IMHO almost as nice as the Bellagio or Venetian, at a fraction of the cost. And no campy themes either.

I even got married there.

And the Monte Carlo has a pretty decent brewpub, too!

I think you are refering to Sam’s Town…

Terribles (a family name in LV by the way) is the casino on Paradise, down the street from Hard Rock.

BTW, you all might want to try the brand new Hofbrauhaus that is directly across the street from Hard Rock. It is an exact replica of the Hofbrauhaus beer garden in Munich and they actually fly in casks of real German beer. For groups of 4 or more, there is a free shuttle to and from your hotel. Great food and after about two large beers, you’ll be singing along to the loud German oom-pah band. Their food is actually very good and huge portions. Just a thought and no, I do not work there or have anything to do with the place other than go there occasionally.

I said if, in our case we had to drive to take TheLadyLion’s merchandise for the vendor fair. We actually liked being away from the bustle of the strip when we wanted to be an in fact stayed at a timeshare off the strip for our honeymoon.
DMark, you are correct sir about Sam’s Town and thanks for the tip on the Hofbrauhaus. My visit to Germany last year was in August so I never got to hoist a maskrug of lager though I did drink a lot of glasses of fine German beer.

Actually, that is the weekend we’re going, and hotels are way more expensive. Can’t go any other weekend anytime soon for a variety of reasons. However, my friend’s cousin lives in Vegas (I think he said about 5 miles from the strip) and she offered to to put us up and be tour guide/party planner, and it looks like we’re probably going to go that route.

Thanks for all the suggestions, even though I have a sneaking suspicion that DMark’s description of “throw up, pass out, shower and get dressed” might be all we actually manage to get to. And again to DMark, the Hofbrauhaus sounds like something we’ll have to check out.

So I have a few questins:
-The TROPICANA HOTEL had an Argentine steakhouse (ElGaucho): is it still good?
-the poolat the TROPICANA had lots ofpretty girls, and was the largest in LV at the time-is it still?
-yhe IMPERIAL PALACE: isit still owned by that nazi guy?
Finally: CIRCUS CIRCUS had a steak house called the ENGLISH PUB-is it still there?

Don’t know about the steakhouse in Tropicana, but there are quite a few good ones…Morton’s (out of Chicago) is here now and has a good rep, but the best is supposed to be in the downtown area…called Hugos - and every woman gets a red rose.
The pool at the Trop is still good, but now if you want to see the best looking women (and men for that matter) by a pool, best bets are at the Hard Rock and at Mandalay Bay (where they have a pool with waves that you can actually surf). But pretty much any pool in Vegas will have its share of visual delights…just not now with the rain and cold.
Imperial Palace is now owned by a corporation and has nothing to do with the previous owner, although I think calling him a Nazi is a bit extreme, but I will leave that subject now.
And Circus Circus still has that steakhouse and it is supposed to be good…but the problem is, you have to actually go into Circus Circus to get there and that is, well, unless you are bringing your kids with you, I would avoid the place like the plague.

Having stayed on both the Strip and on Fremont St., I would not stay on the Strip at all. Get a cheap room on Fremont and take ths bus to the Strip when you want to see the big hotels.

I live in Vegas. One of the coolest things I’ve done out here is Flyaway. It’s indoor skydiving. It’s a blast. There are also a couple of nice roller coasters. The Speed at the Sahara is my favorite though the coaster a NYNY is cool as well. Mandalay Bay has a shark reef which is pretty cool.

If you have the time and a car the Hoover Dam can be toured which is kinda cool.

Never buy books on “How to gamble” or “Rules and strategies”.
They are all recycled crap copied almost verbatum from each other and the ones of twenty and fifty years ago. And they all promise the same thing, that you can beat the odds, or that some “professional gamblers” can beat the odds. The concept of “professional gambler” is only true for private games, where the house gets no cut. Called sharks or card sharps, they are quickly escorted out of casinos.
The myth of “professional gambler” only applies to cheats, like those who secretly team up at a poker game, or mark cards, load dice, and play pickup games in hotel rooms they aren’t going to be sleeping in. And no book will tell you how to do that stuff.
