It was much better than I expected.
I hate Casey Affleck. But he was good in this. How good? I’m still pissed at him for what his character did in the movie.

(Late to the party again, as always)
Just saw this last night. Good in a lot of ways as everyone mentioned. However, I did see a big hole in the plot which either really is there or I missed something along the way.
There was a non-stop search for this missing girl to find her either dead or alive. There’s a whole shoot-out at this quarry where supposedly the girl fell into the quarry. But yet no body is found. And nobody questioned this?
Of all places to retrieve a dead body in water a quarry should be one of the easiest. No currents, no tides, visibility for divers in quarries is generally good. They even knew the area she fell into. The body doesn’t surface a few days later? But everyone just assumes she fell in and what… disappeared? No body yet everyone jumped to the conclusion “she’s dead, case closed.” I didn’t buy it."
So did I miss something here?
The police who were in charge were in cahoots to close the case.
Also, didn’t a character say that the quarry was very deep and implied that it was dangerous even for trained divers? So I understood that the search was cursory. Or perhaps it’s as ouryL suggests, and those in charge manipulated the situation.
Just watched it and it is a fantastic movie. The Afflecks have risen 500% in my view for their work with this one. What most amazes me is that Dennis Lehane has become one of my favourite authors for this and Mystic River, however although I have Prayers For Rain in my bookcase, I haven’t read a word he has written.
Since Prayers For Rain involves the same characters as Gone Baby…Gone I think I will get his stuff in order and begin at the beginning.
Another interesting note is that the flashback scenes are shot with brighter highlights than the contemporary scenes, which seems to be the reverse of the usual technique.
A Drink Before the War is the first Kenzie/Gennaro book, a great place to start.
Other than being a foil at the end, the role of the girlfriend was completely unnecessary throughout.
And the damn thing needed subtitles. Southies are completely unintelligible.
