Good audio tapes for learning French?

I’m a college student looking to study abroad in France in a year or two. I think it would help me get scholarships – not to mention get along overseas! – if I spoke the language relatively well. My school doesn’t offer a beginning French course until fall term next year, and I’d like to get started as soon as possible. I’ve taken three years of Spanish, and I can converse on a basic level there, and I’m well-versed in IPA.

I’m looking for recommendations for good “Learn French, Here’s How!” tapes (preferably which I can get through the library). Thoroughness is more important than speed. I’m definitely looking for specific names and titles, as sorting through a sea of them at Amazon.com is rather daunting.

Does anyone have a particularly good experience with one tape or another they can share?

French in Action in pretty good. If I were you, I’d get a copy of the first-year text (either the one that your class will use or any one – they’re all about the same) and start studying that. If you can learn the first-semester grammar and vocab now, you’ll be way ahead of the game when you take the class.

Check your local library. Mine has all kinds of tapes, and some computer programs for learning languages. You can sample which ones you like, and save a lot of money on things.
