"Good for you" versions of food that actually taste better than the original

Almost all “good for you” versions of foods taste awful compared to the original.

Diet soda, low fat cookies, “no added sugar” ice cream, etc. taste terrible compared to “real” soda, cookies and ice cream.

One exception that I have found is “Baked Lays” potato chips. I actually prefer them over the regular type and would buy them even if I didn’t care about all the oil that is in the regular ones.

Anyone else found some “good for you” versions of foods that actually taste good?

Not quite the same thing, but black coffee is infinitely better than any flavored or sugared coffee drink.

Boca burgers taste better than red-meat burgers (though not as good as burgers made from ground pork or poultry). Also, Diet Pepsi tastes better than the original (not true for Coke though). And I can’t really taste the difference between butter and margarine.

Yoplait’s fat free yoghurt is my favorite yoghurt ever. I also really like Healthy-Choice brand mint chocolate chip ice cream. I’ve not been too impressed with the other flavors, but it’s one of the best mint chocolate chips around, IMO.

I can hardly call them “good for you”, but I prefer the Ruffles Reduced Fat potato chips to the regular kind.

Low-sodium Goldfish crackers are superior to their way-too-salty brethren.

Edy’s No Sugar Added fruit sorbets are fat-free on top of everything else, they contain Splenda (sucralose) instead of sugar, and I think sorbet in general tastes better than most ice cream. I love those things.

I also prefer Miracle Whip to mayonnaise in most things, and the Low Fat Miracle Whip doesn’t bother me at all.

I prefer Light Ranch dressing to normal Ranch dressing, though both are superior to abomination that is Fat Free Ranch.

The new Light Doritos (essentially rebranded WOW chips) are better that the reformulated original Doritos which are oppressively cheesified.

Silk soymilk tastes much better than cow milk!

I’ve found that Jif Reduced Fat Peanut Butter tastes better than the high-test version.

I can’t stand the taste of real sugar sodas, the cloying syrupy sweetness is gag inducing, I much prefer the diet versions. I prefer lowfat plain yogurt to whole milk plain yogurt.

Do brown rice and whole wheat bread count? They’re not perfect for all purposes, but in general I prefer the rich nutty flavor of the whole grain to the blandness of the stripped grain.

Not ‘good for you’ in a traditional sense, but I find that Low-Carb ice cream (especially butter pecan, carmel toffee and chocolate) tastes much better than regular ice cream. The chocolate tastes like a Wendy’s Frosty, without the guilt.

Plain (black) coffee
whole wheat bread
brown rice

(mentioned before but worth repeating)

also, unhomogenized raw milk…much yummier that the watery pasturized stuff

I definitely agree on the baked-chips front. They’re yummy.

A lot of people really prefer dark chocolate to fattier, sweeter milk chocolates. I’m not sure that counts–dark chocolate wasn’t designed as a “healthy alternative.”

I like fat-free Pringles more than regular Pringles.

When I was in Italy recently, I discovered “100% cocoa” black chocolate. It’s got artificial sweetener in it and is marketed as a low-carb food. It is unbelievably good.

Pepperidge Farm brand “Light Style” breads (which I happen to be eating at this very moment) have less calories and still taste just a good, if not better, than the regular version. I prefer to taste what’s in my sandwich rather than what contains it, so I like it’s light texture.

Actually I find that the low fat version is horriable, unfortunatly most no sugar added is also low fat, but some are full fat - no sugar added ice creams and I would easially put them up there with the other full fat versions.

It took me a few days of drinking Pepsi One to make the switch from regular Pepsi, but now I love it. I’ve had occasion to drink regular Pepsi since switching, and found that I can’t stand it anymore.
