Good God, am I really going to try and give myself a haircut?

Yes. Yes I am.
Shouldn’t be too hard, right? All the lady at the hair cutting place does is go #2 all over, and I have a clipper with guides, so why shouldn’t I be able to do the same thing? The only tricky part I see is around the ears and the back of the neck…

Let me give you an important tip here. Please follow this instruction carefully. I know of at least three people who did not follow this advice. Several hundred dollars (or pounds as the case may be) were spent in repairing the damage thereby caused.

  1. Do not cut your own hair while drunk.

Make sure the guard is securely attached and ensure it doesn’t fall off just before you go in for the trim.

Go in the right direction.

I’ve made both of these mistakes while cutting an ex-boyfriends hair.

Are you sure it’s a #2 all over? Usually it’s one guard on the top and a shorter one on the sides and then they get blended together.

Please report back with the results. I’ve seen this happen, and it’s almost never pretty (often quite funny, though). Almost no one’s professional haircut is a simple 1/4 inch all over (#2 guard). But if it really is that short, heck, it won’t take long to grow enough to repair any problems.

In order to get it right in the back you will need at least two largish mirrors. Your bathroom mirror is good for one, but you will need at least one more, and I prefer a handheld.

Well, it went pretty well. And yes, mine is as simple as #2 all over. I made one little mistake just above my left sideburn trying to trim around my ear, but it’s not that noticeable.

Seeing as I don’t have two mirrors (just the one,) I did the back of my neck carefully, but it needs some work. I’ll just get someone else to trim it up, I think.

I used a 1" guard all over and it came out OK, except for the back of the neck was tricky and…imperfect. I did OK over the ears from having watched the Supercuts women multiple times.

And only now I see my spelling error in the title…

Damn.

I cut my own hair. Number 3 all around, in whatever direction makes hair fall off. I stop moving when I stop hearing the BZZZ of shearing hair, and then do the back of my head in front of a mirror. It looks fine.

I was kind of hoping “Goog God” could be the next “Og Smash,” but I fixed it.

I also cut my own hair - I give it a #3 all the way around. The beard gets the 1 setting. And every few weeks I visit a barber who trims the edges and the back of the neck area.

I kind of knew I had cowlicks but I discovered them all when I clipped my hair. “Whatever direction” turned out to be many different ones, trying to follow the twists and turns!

I just do the quarter-inch all over method, too: Much more than that, and I get a Caucaso, and much less, and you need to re-do it regularly to avoid the salt-and-pepper look (at least, if you have light skin but dark hair).

It is possible for things to go wrong, though. Once, I cut my hair while Mom was in town (on the way to a cousin’s wedding; stopping by at my place to pick me up). After I finished, I went out to the living room to show her. She said it looked fine, but wanted to trim down the back of my neck shorter (ordinarily, I just leave that the same quarter-inch as everything else). So back into the bathroom we went, she took the guard off the clipper, and touched up the back. Still no problem. Then I noticed a lock near the top of my head that I had missed, so I grabbed the clipper again, and made one more pass over that spot.

You’ll notice that I didn’t say anything about putting the guard back on. Oops. And as I said, this was for a wedding, so it really did need to look nice. From there, there was really only one option. My mom reports that I looked like Mr. Clean.

I’ve been cutting my own hair for a few years (well, recently I’ve been growing it out). When it’s on the longer side, I use scissors for the whole thing. It took me a few whacky haircuts and a few nipped knuckles (those scissors are sharp), but it looks pretty good, now. When it’s shorter, I use a few different clipper guards. I get someone to help me trim the very edge of the back. Most people are quite surprised to find out that I do it myself, and I probably save $100+ a year.

My hair has been thinning for 15+ year and I’ve been using a 1/4" guide for my entire melon. Looks good, feels good, easy to maintain, quick & easy. Getting the neckline to look good is a matter of using my razor, I can shave a nice straight line now without using a mirror. I go by touch, just kind of run fingertips along the bottom edge and I can tell if anything isn’t even.

I don’t know why, but I hate hate hate getting my hair cut, and if I thought I could do it myself I would.

But I think it is a bad idea.

I cut my own hair, #1 all over. I get a family member to check for missed bits at the back (I tell them that if I get laughed at for having funny hair, I will say that they cut it). Every so often, my wife trims and shapes the back of my neck to tidy it up. Works well, and really cheap.

Si

I slap on one size (3mm) and then go over my head in multiple directions a few times. Takes a couple of minutes and I’m done. Of course, the top takes up to 2 seconds but still. If you like the short, one size look, this is the easiest haircut you’ll ever do. TMI, but I do my over the toilet, flush and then take a shower. couldn’t be easier.

Now see, I was going to suggest the Three-Margarita Buzz Cut. I know this recipe will enhance even the the quickest, most minor bang-trim operation.
